How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 28% | 37 | 2078 |

“New World arouses extreme emotions, but one thing undeniably does well, it perfectly uses the aspects of MMO and in this respect outclasses many rivals. However, it is a pity that some elements limp, which makes the game from Amazon extremely uneven and incomplete.”

“There's a kind of meditative quality about hiking to a quest kilometers away, cutting a tree or two, hitting a couple of rocks and soaking in the scenery. Few games have made walking to objectives a worthwhile experience. But when these walks are more interesting than the objectives, there's a problem.”

“New World: Aeternum makes significant improvements over its original version, but it doesn’t quite become a completely new game. If you abandoned it back in the day due to performance issues or lack of content, this relaunch is a great opportunity to give it another chance. Cross-platform support with crossplay and the enhancements to the combat system are among its biggest achievements, along with a technical optimization that finally delivers.”

“New World: Aeternum further expands the game’s universe into a rich and immersive world. For MMORPG fans, it’s an exciting opportunity to explore new adventures, challenging combat, and a growing community of players. Amazon Games seems to have found the right balance to revitalize its project, keeping the essentials while introducing new features that are sure to breathe new life into New World.”

“New World feels like a modern MMORPG. It looks beautiful, the combat is fluid, and there's plenty to keep you engaged. The island feels alive with warring factions and hostile enemies. And the fighting is very fun. You'll never be short of tasks to complete, but sometimes the narrative will leave you feeling uninspired. It needs a little more emotion injected into it.”

“New World: Aeternum is a high-quality MMO experience, and the transition to PS5 has been smooth. With a focus on action combat, gorgeous visuals, and a free-form, classless levelling system, even castaways on a deserted, haunted island would be hard-pressed to do and see everything it offers.”

“New World: Aeternum is an MMORPG with an engaging storyline, highly enjoyable combat mechanics, a versatile class system, and a robust crafting system that encourages exploration. Thanks to its solid gameplay foundation, we can say this relaunch is a rough diamond, that if polished correctly, has the potential to rival the biggest MMOs on the market.”

“New World offers players - even MMO veterans - a satisfying mix of combat, character growth and discovery.”

“New World is a rare MMORPG that can properly immerse itself in the 'role play', the essence of RPG. However, too poor PVE content, low-capacity servers, and mistakes in live services compared to well-designed PVP systems make the game overshadow its advantages.”

“Rumors of the death of New World were exaggerated. The move to consoles comes off without any major slip-ups. Those looking for a non-Asian MMORPG may be strongly interested in this title.”

“New World can be described as a work in progress, one that is of very high quality, with the core game's mechanics being in place and ready to take the brunt of a top-tier title, but there is still not enough meat on the figurative bones.”

“High-stakes PvP battles and top-notch production values bolster Amazon's MMORPG, even if its PvE content and occasionally frustrating systems may leave some players wanting.”
