How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Although this may not be a perfect game, it must be honestly said that no one ever expected this from Stalker. The atmosphere, harshness, and unforgettable adventures in the Zone matter - and Stalker 2 has more than enough of that.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl would have been one of the candidates for game of the year, but unfortunately, a terrible technical state spoiled the overall feeling of the gameplay. The game's great world and gameplay, coupled with strong atmosphere, music and acting is offset by bugs, errors and optimization problems.

The world is a bleak, inhospitable wasteland, full of miserable people requiring you to traverse a miserable landscape in search of more miserable people within a miserably optimized game. And within all this misery, is a surprisingly moreish and eye-wateringly brutal first person shooter.

At its core, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is an awfully good game with a solid story, an awesome atmosphere of the Zone, and generally great gameplay. Audiovisually, it's a beautiful game, and its gameplay mechanics, along with its higher difficulty, won't give you anything for free. Excellent! If only it weren't knocked off its imaginary pedestal by some pretty serious technical issues, ranging from not-so-good optimization to pretty major bugs, game crashes, inability to complete quests and other flaws that simply ruin this otherwise great experience.

Despite major technical and game design flaws, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl grants the exact experience the series fans have been waiting for over a decade.

What might once have been intended as a rebuke to open-world excess is instead a cautionary tale, an argument for all the little carrot-on-a-stick elements that make a game like this feel like more what it is: a wasteland.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl may not be for everyone, just like the previous installments. Even on medium difficulty, it tends to punish players for every mistake, and breaking into the Chernobyl Zone isn’t something you can do on your first try. It requires patience, but once you get into the game, there’s no looking back. It will reward you with breathtaking immersion and a truly intense atmosphere. The world here is vast and hostile. It doesn’t hold your hand, but it’s full of hidden corners worth exploring. A year after its release, the game is perfectly optimized, fine-tuned, and still being developed. Definitely a thumbs-up, and just in case, you can always lower the difficulty. Plus, it includes a Czech localization.

There has never been a better time to play Stalker 2. And with new features, improved performance, and a full suite of fixes and enhancements, the inherent, irrefutable quality of the game finally shines through.

Stalker 2 is an immaculate game, riddled with so many technical issues that it sometimes becomes unbearable. Despite the issues, the game below the surface is spectacular, providing you with some of the most immersive survival FPS experiences you can have. Its mystical setting and stellar shooting mechanics are enough to transcend the technical issues and provide you with an unforgettable experience.

STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl is a game you love despite its flaws, not for being perfect. The superb atmosphere, immersion, gameplay, game world and audiovisual setting collide with technical flaws that shouldn't have happened on the day of release, though we probably expected a bit of that. The technical bugs couldn’t fight the magic of this game. It shows perfectly how hard it is to give a one, final note, both high and low notes can be justified with many arguments. It all boils down to: how much can you forgive for the opportunity to dive into the Zone?

We go out, we come back. We hope. Sometimes, someone turns on a radio. Sometimes, someone tells a joke. Sometimes, someone dies. This is life in The Zone. Happiness is when a friend plays a song on a guitar. Enjoy every campfire. Enjoy every energy drink.

Despite technical and balancing issues, Stalker 2 serves as an excellent sequel that respects its roots, dives deeper into the Zone’s lore, and expands its role-playing elements.
