How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Trash Goblin is a cozy sim in which you play as a goblin in charge of a travelling cart. You find, clean, and upgrade different kinds of antiques-from trinkets to weapons-and sell them for a profit. Help local townfolk, get to know different creatures, and enjoy the fantasy elements as you upgrade your tools and shop, becoming a master of your craft.

While the emphasis here is mostly on the repetitive cleaning and repairing of random items, the game has a reasonably cozy vibe and a little more substance than some of its competitors

Trash Goblin isn’t aiming for mainstream appeal. It’s designed for players who enjoy slower experiences, repetitive comfort loops, and low-pressure gameplay. If that sounds appealing, there’s a good chance this little goblin shop will quietly steal hours of your life without you even noticing. If not, the experience may feel too shallow to hold attention for long.

Trash Goblin is a fun and simple cozy game with satisfying gameplay loop, memorable characters and stories, and a beautiful art style. There are some aspects of the story and gameplay that lack in variety, but the overall quality makes it a short but enjoyable experience.

Trash Goblin makes you play like a goblin in a nice, quirky world, with simple yet addictive gameplay. However, I really would recommend changing the settings to save your hands from cramps.

You play Trash Goblin for the relaxing tedium of everyday shopkeeping as well as encountering interesting folks along the way. You don’t play this if you’re looking for a challenge or engaging gameplay. That isn’t a bad thing necessarily. It’s entirely up to you depending on the kind of game you want to play.

I liked Trash Goblin in its Early Access version. There were some things to iron out, but it had a lot of promise and potential. I am happy to report that the full version more than lives up to that potential. Trash Goblin is a delightfully relaxing and cozy puzzle game; if you enjoy the genre, I recommend trying it, you’ll love it.

Trash Goblin is a fun mix of running a shop, making things, and solving simple puzzles. Even though it's still in Early Access and needs some work on inventory management, tracking, and contact accuracy, it's already a very fun and stress-free experience.

Spilt Milk Studios has made such a cute, cosy game set in a fantasy world. I love all the named NPCs and all the different races that come to your store. However, the trash left behind by the titular Trash Goblin has left a bit of a stench on the Switch port of this title. I do genuinely recommend exploring the life of running a trinket store, just maybe not on the Switch.

My only real complaint about Trash Goblin is the mechanic of selling to the Strangers (non-named characters). As I mentioned above, I almost never had something someone wanted. It would have been great if players could have placed stock, similar to Moonlighter or Amber Isle. Although the market you’re able to go to does help with this issue a little. Any minor bug issues I did encounter during my playthrough were all in relation to the trinket bag, and they were sorted easily by a reload of the game. Overall, Trash Goblin succeeds in being a casual game. Its gameplay is fun, simple, all while letting you go at your own pace. I confess there weren’t a lot of characters I liked, but on the other hand, there weren’t any I hated either. Which for me adds to the whole running a store vibe. I award Trash Goblin the Thumb Culture Gold Award.

Even with a port that compromises the qualities of the game, the Switch version carries the best aspect of games of this type: portability. There's nothing better than doing some puzzles, cleaning some objects, and making a sale or two in between activities. Furthermore, the game manages to break away from the simulator mold, giving us more of a desire to perform handcrafted tasks than training us for an increasingly gamified job market.
