How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

I must admit I am a bit perplexed by the lack of excitement in Hyperwired. Twin-stick shooters can so rarely be considered boring, but this one manages to land with a dull thud. Without meaningful threats or interesting upgrade paths, the game just thoughtlessly advances, each room feeling just like the last. The plug mechanic, which should have been its saving grace, ultimately acts as the anchor weighing it down.

While I applaud the attempt to add more complexity and interest to the shooter genre, this simply doesn’t feel like its ideas play well together to make the overall experience more fun

Hyperwired settles into a loop that's easy to return to for one more run, then another, then somehow another after that. It's not a game without flaws; the progression systems could use more punch, and the Overcharge mechanic needs smoothing out.

HYPERWIRED is not a game for everyone; it is aimed at players who enjoy challenges, but it delivers a well-crafted experience with a unique concept, especially for those who appreciate systems that allow them to gradually improve and reach their best performance.

Hyperwired ended up being one of those games that quietly won me over. It doesn’t rely on a complicated story or cinematic presentation. Instead, it simply throws you into space, hands you a spaceship with an electrical plug hanging from the back and lets the gameplay do the talking. The shooting itself can occasionally feel a little fiddly before you’ve earned some upgrades, and there is a learning curve during those opening runs. Once everything starts coming together, though, it becomes a genuinely enjoyable pick-up-and-play experience that’s easy to recommend. At under ten pounds, it’s also very reasonably priced, and with a free demo available on Steam, there’s very little reason not to give it a try first. Hyperwired’s clever plug-and-socket mechanic gives it enough personality to stand out. Sometimes all it takes is one good idea, and in Hyperwired’s case, that idea is surprisingly… electrifying.

HYPERWIRED feels like the kind of indie game people could easily become obsessed with once its rough edges are polished out. If future updates improve stability and tighten the controls, this could absolutely become one of the standout roguelike shooters in the indie scene. Right now, though, it feels like a brilliant game fighting against itself. Beneath the crashes and rough controls lies one of the most interesting survival-focused bullet-hell roguelikes released in a long time.

Everything comes back to how limited your ship’s stock feels. You end up paying more attention to your resources than the game itself, and unless you’re playing a survival horror game, your eyes really shouldn’t be glued to the corner of the screen.

Acknowledging the title's limitations, I believe the experience is satisfying for those seeking short play sessions, especially in handheld mode. I must admit, however, that the scale of the pixel art gave me a bit of a headache, as I had to strain my eyes to distinguish between enemy and friendly ships, shots, power-ups, and even the arrows identifying the different types of sockets.

It’s tricky to enjoy the main gameplay loop of a game like Hyperwired, but I struggled to find it consistently. There is a lot to dig into here, and I enjoyed quite a bit; it was just bogged down by a few too many systems. The game looks cool, sounds great, and has some fun ideas. I only wish they all came together in a stronger package overall.

Hyperwired sticks with you more for its core idea than for everything built around it. Its plug‑linked resource system is genuinely clever, it gives the game tension, rhythm, identity. But around that spark sits a roguelike that doesn’t quite dare enough: it underplays build variety, it doesn’t lean into its own weirdness, it stops just short of fully embracing what makes it unique. The result is a solid, fun, sometimes brilliant experience that still needs a couple of metaphorical welds to turn a successful experiment into something truly memorable.
