How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Despite the lack of content Bit Dragon has made a fun new multiplayer arena game in Hyper Jam. Anyone can pick it up and play and things like the perk system and weapons help keep things different enough as you play round to round. Even more importantly is how good it looks and sounds while doing so.

Hyper Jam harkens back to the golden era of Xbox Live Arcade. A low priced no-frills arena brawler that oozes style and nails what's important, whilst offering a brilliant amount of hidden depth for higher level players. It's easy to pick up and play, and full of hilariously enjoyable moments thanks to the incredibly tight feeling moment to moment gameplay. A true indie classic.

The core combat and structure of Hyper Jam‘s hyper-kinetic battles are sound and fun in and of themselves, but there’s just not enough meat on the bones. I had fun getting used to Hyper Jam‘s particular depths in the four hours I played, but wish there was more to see and do. At $15 on consoles (and a slightly discounted $13 on Steam), I can’t say it’s not priced appropriately as a budget line multiplayer game, so make of that as you will. I hope the developers can flesh out Hyper Jam down the road with more of everything, because that would give this colorful, fun arena fighter a much longer shelf life.

It’s a game for a living room full of friends or to play in small sessions online. The perk system is nice and does lead to close, manic and very tense matches. If your in the market for a local arena brawler that does offer something different, Hyper Jam will keep you entertained. If you are looking for a deep, all-encompassing game to eat away your free time, look elsewhere.

Despite its simple premise and familiar aesthetic, Hyper Jam delivers an intense, fun experience that we really cannot recommend enough. This is a game PlayStation owners should pickup.

Even with its limited amount of content, Hyper Jam is a very fun game. Its cyberpunk aesthetic, fast-paced and intense combat and the systems that make every round different and unique are great. It is a game that can be enjoyed for hours and hours online or, specially, with friends on a couch.

It's light on content, but it's a fantastically frantic mutliplayer brawler with style and some great gameplay ideas

That is the quintessential fun of Hyper Jam and it allowed me to look past a few of its annoyances. Slowly ticking toward the end of the game as the 1,500 point marker draws closer and tactically choosing which power-ups and battle strategies would yield greater chances at victory became an addicting affair. The joy of winning a closely contested match by knocking an opponent out of the arena or timing a perfect block that would send their own projectile back at them is the reason that competitive games were created.

Hyper Jam's core gameplay is engaging and fun with friends and against random opponents. Its style is bold and vibrant giving the game a memorable vibe. However, a lack of progression and variety means this is a game I will only break out for 30 minutes of fun when I have friends over.

Hyper Jam is the perfect couch game with some friends, or a palette cleanser from other denser AAA titles. It will definitely stay in my rotation of games to play with my buddies whenever I have the opportunity. This lightweight arena brawler is a stylish delight.

At the end of the day, Hyper Jam is a simple yet deep Arena Brawler that rewards the more skilful player. Combat is intense and fast and it’s important to note that the net code itself is smooth and very stable, a quality that many AAA games sadly lack.
