How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Overall, we’d still recommend exploring the many retro compilations and emulated releases already available on the PS Store first; while this may be a more expensive option, it’s hard to beat your own personally curated collection and the advantages of running software locally. But of course not all of the titles available with Antstream Arcade can be purchased natively, and it’s neat having access to everything under one umbrella, especially when the cost of a lifetime subscription is relatively good value considering just how much you get. Just do keep in mind that your cloud streaming experience will vary, and even in a perfect environment, will still exhibit shortcomings compared to a native solution.

Antstream Arcade is not a perfect service and the games included are not all absolute bangers, but what's on offer is more than enough to justify its subscription price and more, with a treasure trove of delights from way back when and games that you may have always wanted to try but never quite found the time. Now is the time.

Antstream Arcade offers clear value for those who enjoy retro gaming and do not want to buy different collections or game bundles over and over again. The selection of games offered is extensive, but does (still) show considerable gaps

As someone who had plenty of experience with M.A.M.E. (that’s Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator to you young’uns!) has a MiSTer, the Antstream service isn’t something I absolutely need. However if you are not interested in performing questionable legal activities, researching front ends…or gasp run command line (it’s been a while since I’ve used MAME, ok). Antstream is a perfectly fine off-the-shelf product to sate your retrogaming needs. The platform definitely has plenty of room for growth and improvements…perhaps after my year is up, I might revisit the platform to see if I’ll renew for another year or permanently add it to my PlayStation library.

Despite some hefty flaws, the fact that Antstream Arcade has come on leaps and bounds since its debut in 2013 gives me hope that the service will continue to improve in the weeks, months and years after its PlayStation debut. Even so, in its current far from perfect form, Antstream Arcade still represents great value for what is a veritable mountain of games from a broad swathe of gaming systems that would otherwise be lost to time and garnishes that offering with a compelling social gaming hook.

Antstream has won awards like “Heritage in Games” at the TIGA awards, and that best describes the quality of this platform. It’s a preservation library that gives players to play things that they would simply never come across, much less find a way to play. It might not be the “greatest hits” platform, yes, but if spending an afternoon wading through a library of obscure titles and trying things that alternate between happy discovery and dismal waste of time sounds like fun, then Antstream is probably something you’ll enjoy.

Antstream Arcade is a must-have subscription for the retro enthusiast. It has a great selection of games, and even if every big name isn’t there and they aren’t natively downloadable, the cloud-based service works incredibly well. Add in a fantastic challenge system and local multiplayer, and this is an easy recommendation.

The 'Netflix of Retro Gaming' comes to PSN and it works surprisingly well with the streaming performing as it should and lots of features that give you a good reason to stick with the games on offer. We're exciting to see what else they can do with it but what's here already is great.

Antstream Arcade is a good cloud-based retro gaming service that offers more than 1,300 classic games, making it superior to other platforms. Fans of retro gaming will find a special selection of regularly updated classic titles on this platform, which comes highly recommended. However, there are still some connection issues that can be fixed with patches.
