How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

There was a nonzero chance that I’d be so completely engrossed in Speed Limit‘s special blend of “just one more try” masochism that I’d forget to put up a review, and that speaks to what makes it so entertaining.

An incredibly exhilarating and playful experience, Speed Limit is a love letter to the action-packed blockbusters of decades past. It blasts you through its quick campaign at lightning speed and will leave you with your heart pounding, your palms soaked, and a massive cheeky smile across your face. Though it could be a bit kinder to players unfamiliar with arcade-style difficulty and some of its levels aren’t as bombastic as others, Speed Limit is still a sweet and short neo-retro explosion of fun. Fans of the arcade-era and folks looking for something fast-paced and unique will find a lot to love here.

Nevertheless, Speed Limit was a pretty charming experience that definitely left an impression on me, and even if things don’t feel quite balanced in some ways, I can at least give this a solid recommendation to those willing to take up the challenge, even if just to see the cool ways in which the game shifts genre.

Speed Limit is a nice retro tribute with plenty of replayability that will please speedruners the most. Just make sure you come equipped with plenty of patient and nerves of steel.

While a shorter game in terms of length, there's honestly a lot here on offer in terms of replayability. It is by far some of the most obsessive fun I've had with a game in a long while. Speed Limit is a love letter to old arcade games, and as such it will make you fee like a kid again and want to have "just one more go".

Speed Limit is a genre swapping game following the life of a man who has just been handed a gun. The player fights off enemies in a side-scrolling shooter, blasts cars in a racing game, and defeats aerial foes in a fighter jet. Fighting through ten unique and challenging levels, Speed Limit pays homage to arcade games of the past. By switching genres frequently, Speed Limit keeps the player guessing.

Speed Limit is a love letter to the rush of emotions felt during off-the-wall action sequences of the 80s. It’s engaging but not enraging, explosive but not expensive, just like an all-out action game ought to be. Some players may lament at the game’s length, but all good things come to an end sooner or later, right? And for only $9.99, it’s honestly a great price for the cinematics alone. If you love over the top action movies and games and want to grab a new speedrunning experience, Speed Limit is a must buy.

Speed Limit is a heady mixture of tough as old boots nostalgia that requires patience and/or stubbornness to crack its punishing action set-pieces. The joy comes from trying to perfect your run on Speed Limit rather than simply beating it, and there's varying mileage in this. At the very least, it's a fun nostalgic showcase of several classic game types mushed together in a surprisingly cohesive fashion.

Speed Limit is a great game. Even with its short duration and somewhat sparse content, it provides a fair amount of fun and its constant changes always leave us with that desire to "spend one more coin".
