How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“A Plague Tale: Requiem is definitely a game worth playing for fans of the original despite my criticisms. Overall I enjoyed my time, thanks in no small part to a vastly superior second half. I lament the loss of better directed linear stealth in favor of messier open environments, but the core of what makes A Plague Tale great - strong characters, bleak horror, and tons of squicky rats - remains firmly in place.”

“A Plague Tale: Requiem is not a perfect game but it is a perfect example of how to take everything that's come before and improve all facets of its development. From the beautiful soundtrack to the stunning locales; from the thematically resonant story to the tight gameplay mechanics; Plague Tale: Requiem is an absolute joy to play through and easily one of this year's best games.”

“A Plague Tale: Requiem is one of the most prominent games this year. Great plot, lots of characters, game systems and some unique ideas is what drives this whole apocalyptic experience.”

“A Plague Tale: Requiem doesn't bring revolution or change but merely grinds what the first installment brought in 2019. While this may seem like a minus, Requiem handles all the leading aspects of an action-adventure game, dispatching brilliantly. The story unravels the further journey of siblings Amicia and Hugo, introduce entirely new characters, and subverts your stereotypical idea of how the story could continue, creating some great twists. The gameplay may be somewhat basic, and you won't find anything else in the game besides stealth, action, and exploration, but thanks to the excellent pacing, you won't even mind eliminating enemies silently or aloud; you'll enjoy solving puzzles and exploring locations both beautiful and hideous. Requiem also continues to use rats creatively, though with them come some ills that will sometimes cause frustration, and don't expect too many graphical options on the console. There are very few, and the game languishes in places with its 30 frames per second. The visuals and styling are breathtaking, though. A Plague Tale: Requiem thus proves that linear games can still be fun in 2022 and that you don't need a revolution to create a unique experience.”

“Even though Requiem is a bit formulaic, it's still a great game with an interesting story, great characters and fantastic visuals.”

“Requiem is still a rough experience, especially for anyone who’s seen young loved ones fade away in the last few years, but it’s an allegorical experience that has value and power, especially in light of that. In the end, the eponymous requiem in question is a quite literal violent scream, giving way to sorrow, but ultimately acceptance and thanks for the time given.”

“A Plague Tale: Requiem is a well-crafted game that strives to take everything from its predecessor a step further. It succeeds in telling a compelling story, features beautiful environments, and has an immersive atmosphere. However, the gameplay suffers in places and is incredibly clunky. Design flaws and occasional forced padding don’t help the game either. Still, the positives outweigh the negatives, and fans of the first game won’t be disappointed. Just don’t expect a top-tier AAA title, because this rat adventure unfortunately doesn’t belong in that league.”

“Ultimately, A Plague Tale: Requiem is hands down one of the best single-player campaigns I have played recently.”

“If you are on a quest to find a video game that could make you cry, may your quest end right here. A continuation of a story that was fine on its own, Requiem delivers one of the most powerful stories ever conceived in a video game. But be wary of the framerate drops on the PlayStation 5 console, which bring their own set of unforeseen despair.”

“A Plague Tale: Requiem is a triumph of AA games. The developers have proved that talent and creativity can make up for the lack of a big budget needed to create a beautiful, engrossing and memorable game.”

“Everything in Requiem is bigger, bolder, and better than Innocence was. There's more variety in which players can approach situations and it plays and looks great. It offers a fantastic narrative with bigger stakes and conflicts, as well as a bigger cast of characters and complementary tools. And it only leaves you wanting more, which is good, because by the end of the game, you'll wonder where A Plague Tale goes from here. After the events of Requiem, the possibilities seem abundant.”

“A Plague Tale: Requiem is everything I’ve hoped for. The ideal and definitive sequel for anyone who has played the prequel or has simply empathized with or grown attached to the De Rune family. This is why I’d like to share with you today an extremely personal review of a project that captivated me from start to finish, dragging me into a whirlwind of emotions, passion, and indescribable sensations.”
