How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Days Gone is both a solid PC port and a solid game. Fun gameplay and good storytelling all while running at a steady framerate with little in the way of bugs or technical issues.”

“Days Gone is not a perfect game. It never quite reaches the narrative mastery of The Last Of Us nor does it manage to instil the same awe-inspiring exploration games like Assassin's Creed have managed so successfully in the past. Its zombies are far less intimidating than those in Dying Light and some of the core gameplay loops, including Deacon's motorbike maintenance, are outright detrimental to the entire experience. Yet as I played through the 65+ hours of this open world game, Day's Gone really started to grow on me. So much so that if you can persevere with the issues, Day's Gone opens up in the best possible way to deliver a memorable and narratively compelling adventure well worth experiencing.”

“Days Gone is, unfortunately, not a revolution and not a GOTY contender, but an artificially overextended project for those who like capture camps, craft weapons and traps, collect items and clean out nests of infected on a big map.”

“Days Gone may not be the most original and innovative title, but it's still a very solid open-world story adventure that won't give you anything for free. For about thirty hours of gameplay I was genuinely entertained.”

“Despite all the bugs, the horrible optimization, the empty open world and the huge amount of fetch quests, Days Gone still is an enjoyable game. Not least thanks to all the great characters whose stories are interesting, even when they are asking you to find some flowers or to clear one more camp on another edge of the map..”

“The game meets the baseline level of quality we might expect from a big-budgeted joint, yet it remains a tiresome, empty experience.”

“The developers from Bend Studio managed to process the story of Days Gone in an original way. Unfortunately, the only interesting and innovative element of the game is the fight with the horde, and that's damn little. Every time the game starts to lift you out of your chair with something interesting, it immediately has to spoil it with something. The imbalance in important parts is so obvious here that it ruins the overall impression. Days Gone is a completely average title that will find its fans, but I'm afraid that the developers bet on the certainty of a second part so much that they didn't want to put all the aces they had ready for the second part into the game. And it's a shame, this could have been an excellent game that could have easily had two more sequels.”

“It's the different approach to Days Gone's storytelling that sets it apart from most other open world games. Despite this, the elongated storyline can make some parts feel like a slog but even so it's very much worth your time to experience it.”

“As it stands, Days Gone is a flawed PS4 exclusive that delivers less than what we've come to expect from an open-world game in 2019. There's fun to be had here, but it's layered with so much busywork that playing it feels like a chore more often than not. ”

“In Days Gone I receive all features I like in video games, atmosphere, interesting characters, realism, well-made shooting, and cool stealth mechanics. Despite that Days Gone may be a real disappointment for fans of Ubisoft's open world games, there’s a lot of content but it's all based on the story-driven campaign. It’s a long storyline but there's nothing else to do.”

“Days Gone is a mixed bag. Oregon is beautiful, and the impact of the freakers on the world dynamics are quite thrilling. The driving and shooting are pretty satisfying, and the game has enough content to last 50-60 hours in a normal playthrough. But even though the game is fun, it is not without quite a few flaws that reduces its quality.”

“Bend have laid some really solid ground work here with Days Gone. It was their first console title in 12 years and if they continue building out the world of Days Gone, take on player feedback and fix the gameplay issues people are having issues with then the sequel game will be well on it’s way to being a title ‘freak’ out over. While there were some technical issues I encountered along the way and I didn’t encounter that ‘Sony level magic’ (which is a pretty high bar to hold things against) I did have a lot of fun with Days Gone surviving the ever-cruel world and doing it in my style.”
