How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 68% | 66 | 1 |

“MXGP 2020 is an improvement over the previous title - however, don't expect a leaps-and-bounds, next-generational jump. While this is hardly a spectacular next-gen overhaul, the building blocks are all lined up for an even more impressive iteration in the years to come. Career Mode still seems quite lacking, as bike customisations and sponsor benefits are minimal, and the experience points earned to rank up don't amount to anything. On the other hand, Playground Mode and Track Editor open up avenues for much more excitement and enjoyment, especially as the online community continues to produce more advanced and elaborate tracks.”

“While recurring problems persist, MXGP 2020 is the new highpoint for Milestone's licensed racing series. Hugely reduced load times and more immersive gameplay than ever before help push this year's entry that extra little bit ahead, though it continues to be let down by its environments and lack of content. The addition of Race Director Mode - a transplant from the Monster Energy Supercross titles - at a later date will definitely help, but a more substantial update in 2021 would be even better.”

“Offering no degree of hand-holding or tutorial, MXGP 2020 isn’t an easy ride. If it does take your fancy, however, you’ll fine a well-polished and authentic look at the world of motocross.”

“MXGP 2020 is improved over the last entry but its first outing on the next generation consoles isn’t as impressive as I would’ve hoped. It looks better, loads faster, and plays smoother than ever before but I think it’s still outclassed in most of those areas as well as in things like its Career mode by some last generation racing games. Dirt bike fans will enjoy the realistic handling model and the DualSense features help to make it a bit more immersive while playing. If you skipped MXGP 19 or are just that hardcore of a fan then this isn’t a bad pick up but it might be worth waiting for MXGP 2021 to see what the franchise can do on the next generation with a bit more time to fine tune it.”

“For every time MXGP 2020 races forward, it seems to slip backwards somewhere else. Depending on what you want out of a motocross game, this could either be a cautious recommendation or a hard pass, neither of which are likely to impress you.”

“MXGP 2020 is a fun ride, a linear evolution for a series that still lacks of "wow effect". This new chapter gives a slightly better experience wheel on the ground, but overall it fail a little bit to involve the player with lackluster game modes.”

“The PlayStation 5 version of MXGP 2020 feels exactly like most early titles released right after a console’s initial launch period. It’s midway between the last generation and what the next generation of gaming will actually look and feel like, and a game that utilizes some of its new hardware’s capabilities. But at the end of the day, it feels just like a slightly prettier last-gen title.”

“With no real new modes or features, however, casual players may want to think twice before splashing the cash, especially if they own last year’s MXGP 2019. It’s about time Milestone at least injected more depth into the career mode, as the series is becoming a little stale.”

“MXGP 2020 is a motocross game that on the surface looks like its rather mediocre predecessors, but with higher resolution and better framerate. After a lap on the track, however, it becomes obvious that the control and physics have been greatly improved. In a year or two, we may be laughing at MXGP 2020 due to the fairly simple graphics and lack of content, but here and now it is actually the best interpretation of the sport so far. ”

“Developer Milestone has been releasing the MXGP series of games for years. As a newcomer to both the sport and the games, how does the first PS5 edition of this Motorcross series fare?”

“MXGP 2020 is a game with some good things going for it, but there may not be enough there to keep casual motocross fans entertained for long.”
