How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Although not quite as good as its predecessor, Death end re;Quest 2 is still a decent sequel all things considered. The combat is fun, the story is interesting (even with its problems), and it’s nice to see some higher production values this time. However, it still suffers from the same writing issues as the first and has arguably worse level design.

In conclusion, Death end re;Quest 2 is a very strong sequel that successfully combines a gripping narrative with engaging and entertaining gameplay. Players are treated to a haunting journey full of emotional complexity set in a visually stunning environment. On top of that, you get an immersive soundtrack. If, like me, you enjoy a mix of psychological horror, an innovative combat system, rich character development, and cute anime girls, this title is a must-have for your library. I’m definitely not afraid to say that Death end re;Quest 2 sets a high bar for the JRPG genre.

Death end re;Quest 2 carries over most of the first installment’s major aspects, both good and bad, while also distancing itself enough from its predecessor to make it feel almost standalone. However, the removal of a number of unique ideas previously implemented means the shortcomings are much more apparent this time around, and the formula established by the first game is starting to wear woefully thin.

Continuing the startling violent theme coupled with many moments of raw emotion related to the utter awfulness of humanity, Death end re;Quest 2 certainly delivers for old and new fans alike. While aspects of the battle system could have been explained better, and elements of the voice overs be tweaked, overall it is a superb horror RPG on Nintendo Switch. Replayability will depend how much of a fan of the original players are, and completionists can happily use the skip event mode to make the second play through faster, along with the option of keeping weapons, attack skills, and character levels the same as the end of the first playthrough.

While it doesn’t change much from its predecessor Death end re;Quest 2 tells a gripping tale that combines great horror themes with solid RPG mechanics that will surprise most players.

I highly recommend taking a look into Death End Re;Quest if you are a fan of JRPGs or Corpse Party, as I doubt you will be disappointed. Just be aware that the psychological thriller aspect can have some really not PG friendly scenes, so please heed the disclaimers.

Death end re;Quest 2 is an experiment, which by itself is a great thing. It attempts to hybridise two genres of games that don’t normally share the limelight. But in the end, there is very little cohesion between the game’s two halves. It’s a JRPG with poor character development, and it’s a horror game that isn’t all that scary. And apart from the amazing battles, the game is frustrating on multiple fronts. There are parts of Death end re;Quest 2 that could be salvaged and made part of a better game, unfortunately that doesn’t amend all the shortcomings that are prolific within this title.

Even with Death end re;Quest 2's short run time and balancing issues, it is still a unique horror RPG that should be looked at if you’re a fan of other Compile Hearts RPGs. If you haven’t played Compile Heart’s other games, this is a solid entry point.

Death end re;Quest 2 nails a lot of things: narrative, aesthetics, soundtrack, and character growth are all fantastic. It falters in narrative delivery, visual design, and difficulty spikes. It’s a commendable gothic JRPG from Idea Factory that does interesting things even if not all of them work.

Death End re;Quest 2 is the horror RPG I never knew I wanted. Its mysterious and grim story is reminiscent of some of the all-time great Japanese visual novel and indie adventure experiences, but the fact that it's tied up into an addictive and enjoyable RPG package is the icing on the cake. The fun begins to get soured a bit by the sudden difficulty spikes throughout the game, but that didn't stop me from enjoying this terrifying and jaw-dropping story from beginning to end.

Death end re;Quest 2 is a safe JRPG sequel but one I very much enjoyed when I finished it. The gameplay isn’t vastly different from the first game and the difficulty is a bit all over the place at times. The story though is once again dark and full of terrors and was the main driver for me to play this through. I like the characters within it a lot and was shocked at some of the story beats. If a dark and twisted JRPG is what you are seeking this fall then Death end re;Quest 2 should be on your playlist.
