How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

A fine action flick, but it really flaws with its dull postmodern efforts.

Midnight Fight Express is a hidden gem in the fighting game genre and a testament to what the vision of a single talented creator can achieve. It’s a pure, uncompromising, and immensely satisfying beat ’em up that makes you feel like an invincible action hero. While the story is just a distraction to be ignored, the phenomenally crafted combat, breathtaking animations, and electrifying soundtrack effortlessly carry the entire experience on their shoulders. The only risk is that your fingers will get tired from all that frantic button-mashing.

From kinetic combat to the occasional fun Easter egg, it gets so much about the genre right. Unfortunately, the game severely lags in the elements that most other games in the genre get right. If you've already burned through Sifu, TMNT: Shredder's Revenge, and Streets of Rage 4 and want another action game to tide you over until Bayonetta 3, Midnight Fight Express' richly-animated brawls will satisfy, though probably not as much as those before or after. However, if you're looking for over-the-top action that toes the line with comedy, interspersed with cheesy dialogue and twists pulled from an old pulp thriller, you owe it to yourself to play Midnight Fight Express.

If you’re a fan of the genre or at least have an inkling of interest in just being a real-time John Wick archetype, give this one-man army-developed game a shot. Or a few punches in the throat; whatever move suits your fancy.

Midnight Fight Express is a beat 'em up that should feel familiar to genre fans, but does things so well that it doesn't matter. Fast and brutal, the game is a satisfying and bloody journey of revenge.

The soundtrack blasts your ears with grimy hype up beats that rocks the combat even more than it does on its own. There's a very obvious issue with a bland story that puts a halt to the game but there's a lot to enjoy here. Midnight Fight Express is a fantastic game that plays great, sounds fantastic, if only it would get out of its own way with the story.

Midnight Fight Express is a game about kicks and punches with its own style. You may find yourself shaking your head as the game's soundtrack plays. But unfortunately, something is missing in gameplay.

Midnight Fight Express is a solid beat-'em-up. The base move set is enough to make you feel dangerous, but a fully kitted out character makes you feel invincible. The combat is appropriately crunchy, and the game doesn't wear out its welcome despite having a ton of brief levels. It fulfills that fantasy of being an unstoppable action hero, and it keeps that fantasy going thanks to the game's overall replayability. For fans of action titles in general, Midnight Fight Express is well worth checking out.

Playing as Babyface with such smoothly animated mocap and fluent combo chains feels powerful. Being able to charge through levels, using everything in sight to bounce off goons like a martial arts master is an unstoppable sensation. Sure, the story isn't that deep and doesn't have the budget or quality of larger game studios, but the game compensates with very inventive fights. Midnight Fight Express is the John Wick experience in video game form.

Midnight Fight Express is built around its encounters, yet does nothing to build them in meaningful ways. This train is going nowhere fast.

Midnight Fight Express is a short and brutal fight that doesn't overstay its welcome. You'll definitely come out of it with more than a few scrapes, but it's all worth it just to watch the sun rise at the end.
