How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (Metacritic) | – | – | 0 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 80% | 74 | 509 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 90% | 84 | 49 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Get caught up in the gold rush with this fantastic simulation of life in the American wilderness. As well as digging for gold, you can hunt, rebuild a hotel and enjoy a variety of other activities. The mix of different activities makes the game attractive and will keep you entertained for hours.”

“Alaska Gold Fever offers a solid mining experience that you can sink your teeth into for hours, mostly because you actually have to. Unfortunately, once you step away from the digging, the story and other activities don’t do much to keep you hooked or make you want to explore the map. Mining fans will probably love being able to tunnel through caves without the actual back-breaking labor. But for everyone else, just curious about how it works, you’d better bring a lot of patience and some serious in-game elbow grease if you want to reach that gold deep in the caves.”

“The game is not completely without merit, I enjoyed the atmosphere, and getting immersed in the wilderness of Alaska in the late 1800s. The game has potential in the later parts where you can purchase different mines and operate them by hiring employees, however you're not going to have enough money or resources to do this until a dozen hours in. ADHD-riddled gamers who want to experience everything that this game has to offer in the first couple of hours should steer clear from this title. While I can appreciate what the developers were trying to do, I really can't recommend Alaska Gold Fever over titles such as Minecraft, Animal Crossing, or any casual games with RPG elements that focus on travelling, exploration, and/or business management. Still, it's not too bad, if you just want to kill some time - or some bears.”
