How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

30 Birds is a rich experience with a gorgeous world to explore that takes full advantage of the marriage of both 2D and 3D. The puzzles are engaging and there is plenty of variety to be found across the lanterns and amongst its colourful cast of characters. The story ends a little more abruptly than I would have liked, but it does end with the implication that Zig and the bird goddess are romantically interested in each other, which rules. There's a lot to love with 30 Birds so it's a shame that it still has a couple of bugs here and there and that the outstanding soundtrack just disappears sometimes. They are very minor issues though and ones that I'm certain will be patched very soon. I had a great time exploring the lanterns within 30 Birds and I'm sure you will too.

30 Birds is a very good narrative puzzler that is elevated by the lantern levels and Persian inspired design. Across its eight hours to complete, 30 Birds provides a number of engaging puzzles and a good story that contains a decent amount of humour.

The accessible puzzles, the search for solutions and the discovery make this game a great game that looks excellent in terms of illustration. The creative aspect is bursting at the seams and that makes the game perhaps a bit 'different' and 'weird' at first, but it quickly becomes very fun to play. It never gets very difficult, it never gets very challenging and it never gets very addictive, but still I had the idea that I could enjoy myself very well in those few hours. The four worlds that you discover and that you can travel to are all amusing and well-developed and the 2D platforming in combination with the 3D tilts are a great concept that works well. It is not that 30 Birds really radiates top quality or makes a deep impression, but it is true that this again manages to bring 'something different' than we are used to.

Once again, Arte France has shown a knack for creating interesting games that are not only fun to play, but also look beautiful and introduce players to new themes. 30 Birds is fun to play thanks to its colorful, handcrafted world, the sometimes funny and quirky characters and the background music, but without slipping into the ridiculous. And birds.
