How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Dragon’s Dogma 2 will belong to a fairly specific audience. The game requires a significant amount of time to truly enjoy it. You can't simply play it for a moment because you'll feel like you haven't made any progress. At the same time, it's great that such a title appeared, in times when AAA titles are bland and safe a different approach is needed. We needed a game to demonstrate that things can be done differently.”

“Dragon’s Dogma 2 is outwardly hostile to its audience, embracing everything that made the original such a hassle to enjoy. A game designed with the purpose of wasting a player’s time, which makes Capcom’s “time saver” microtransactions all the more sickening. It’s a glorified xerox that you will adore if you believe Dragon’s Dogma was literally perfect when it released in 2012 and absolutely none of the progress within games development in the past twelve years meant one fucking thing. Indeed, if your idea of a good time is having a terrible time, you’ll love this malignant resurrection of ideas and implementations that should have stayed long dead.”

“Dragon's Dogma 2 is an outstanding action RPG that has been plunged by the incompetence of the developers and the greed of those in charge of publishing at Capcom. At this point, I can in no way recommend the game unless you have top-of-the-line hardware, and even then you won't have a perfect experience. The presence of microtransactions is also a harmful decision and does not make me optimistic about the future of Capcom's games. Wait a minimum of six months for possible performance patches, which unfortunately at this point are not expected to appear anytime soon. If it weren't for the above problems, I would have my game of the year candidate here.”

“To have a genuine love for Dragon's Dogma 2 can be a challenge. And yet, despite its many shortcomings, it's really, really hard not to love it.”

“Dragon's Dogma 2 essentially reprises and enhances the concepts from its predecessor, focusing on exploration and engaging combat. While it generally succeeds, the game suffers from repetitiveness in enemies and combat, and has notable optimization issues. Despite these flaws, it remains a must-play for action RPG enthusiasts and fans of immersive worlds.”

“Dragon’s Dogma 2 is such a profoundly strange and inventive game at so many turns that its occasional stumbles are largely forgivable. For one, there are a few too many side quests that leave you stuck in town, some of which lean on woefully underbaked stealth sequences. The technical performance is also far from perfect, with unsteady framerates and clear graphical errors popping up frequently. In total, though, these come across as the drawbacks of a game whose reach exceeds its grasp, which is better by far than a game with no reach at all.”

“Dragon's Dogma II will delight RPG fans and fans of the first game. It’s a game for those seeking a challenge and craving the freedom to explore without modern “hand-holding.” Despite some technical shortcomings and a story that drags in places, it more than makes up for it with a superbly executed combat system and extensive character customization options. If you’re willing to overlook a few things, the game will reward you with hours of fun. It’s just a bit of a shame that the developers didn’t try to offer a little more than just an improved version of the first game.”

“Despite technical issues you simply have to notice the quality of Dragon's Dogma 2. The developers ignored the trends and created a game focused strongly on a great idea for exploration and combat. It's a truly unique action RPG.”

“'Dragon's Dogma 2' manages to sand down what didn't work in the original without compromising on its ideals, producing a fascinating, danger-filled open-world adventure.”

“Dragon's Dogma 2 is the work that Hideaki Itsuno would have liked to crown twelve years ago, but without the proper means and finances, he never managed to complete. The title presents itself as an action RPG certainly not without flaws, many of which lie in the optimisation of the title due to the perhaps improper use of a graphics engine not designed for an open world. The real strength of Dragon's Dogma 2, however, lies in its portrayal of a world as vast as it is alive and full of adventures to be experienced, thanks also to a revolutionary AI present in very few other productions.”

“Dynamic combat and world events keep the game fresh and engaging after many hours of play. Even with its glaring deficiencies, it is hard to say I’ve had more fun playing any game this year.”

“Dragon’s Dogma 2 represents the culmination of what Capcom aimed to achieve with the first installment, surpassing the technical limitations that once hindered its full realization. However, despite being another success for the Japanese developer, it is still far from a perfect experience, with an unconvincing narrative and certain issues that hinder full immersion, an aspect promised as a key strength but unfortunately not yet fully realized.”
