How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 doesn’t reinvent third-person shooters. But it doesn’t need to. It knows exactly what it is, a brutal, straightforward, satisfying power fantasy in a richly detailed universe, and it executes that vision with surprising polish and confidence. From the bombastic campaign to the co-op replayability, it’s a must-play for fans of Gears of War, World War Z, or anyone looking to turn their brain off and rip some xenos apart.”

“Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine II can provide hours of fun with three distinct ways of playing it. World War Z with Tyranids is a hell of a pitch, and it’s been realized successfully, albeit with a number of unsuccessful elements holding it back. Puzzling design decisions litter the entire experience, and at times I was left wondering what the hell Saber Interactive was thinking. Yet... I'm really quite into it.”

“Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a title that I can in good conscience recommend to anyone who craves intense, violent gameplay. Fans of the universe will certainly be satisfied, and people who, like me, are not familiar with it, will certainly be interested in it. It is absolutely not a perfect game, but it offers a lot of great fun, and its atmosphere is unique.”

“Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 reminded us how much fun a shooter campaign used to be. It is a reminiscence of the glory days of shooter campaigns when franchises like Gears of War used to own the charts, and we spent hours and hours just raining down bullets on the enemies. While it has been some time since the original Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine came out, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 returns and instantly revives the franchise by reinvigorating it with new life. The shooting mechanics are fantastic, the level design is gorgeous, and the gameplay is just satisfying. Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 proves that a solid shooting campaign can still exist in today’s gaming world. If you have been dying to experience an amazing shooting campaign with great visuals and epic fights, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is the game for you.”

“Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 is an incredibly good roguelike that does justice to the world of Warhammer 40,000. For fans of this legendary franchise, the game is an absolute must-play; for the rest of you, it's still a great title, but one that newcomers may find confusing. Either way, there's no denying that it's a well-crafted shooter that will keep you entertained for a couple of evenings, and even more so if you have friends with whom you can go through the campaign and the co-op missions.”

“The most striking achievement of Space Marines 2 is the way the game presents the remarkable atmosphere of Warhammer 40,000 universe. Epic battles, insane architecture and oppressing tone, this game has it all.”

“Simply the best Warhammer 40K action game that brings a totally accurate W40K experience. And despite some flaws, the game is solid in its pure brutal way.”

“Your might proves substantial enough to bend even clichés to your will. When, during a cutscene, a monster in the background looks like it’s about to get the jump on Titus, one of your buddies casually blasts it from out of the frame. The bait and switch feels like a winking admission by Space Marine 2: This is an unabashedly over-the-top ride, but it won’t stoop to boring contrivance. Your strength is too profound, your time too important, to abide that.”

“Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is, in the best sense of the word, a typical sequel, it features everything we loved about the original game, but in a more spectacular and modern presentation. Fans of the first game really have no reason to hesitate. Beyond them, however, I’d also recommend this title to players who have an affinity for old-school third-person shooters, as well as those who’d like to play a horde shooter that’s entertaining even in single-player mode.”

“The great success of Space Marine 2, which is the result of the combination of its visuals and gameplay, is the vibe not only of this very specific universe, but also of the very essence of what Space Marines are. The game is centred around what is most important in Warhammer 40k - grotesque violence treated with due severity, pathos and downright fanatical seriousness.”

“If you’re a fan of Warhammer 40K or enjoyed the original Space Marine, then Space Marine 2 is absolutely worth your time. The game is a clear evolution of its predecessor, with combat that feels more impactful, smoother, and downright visceral.”

“Space Marine 2 proves to be an excellent sequel, meeting the highest expectations. Despite some significant flaws in the extra modes’ balance, it remains a great title that comes close to masterpiece status.”
