How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Sunderfolk is the debut game from Secret Door and Dreamhaven. It expertly facilitates a TTRPG experience for a group of four players, using phones as controllers. It perfectly balances accessibility and depth, making it easy for new players to jump in and tactical veterans to find a challenge. The few weeks I’ve had Sunderfolk for review have been some of the most fun multiplayer experiences I’ve had in years. I look forward to playing a lot more.

Sunderfolk is like an unassuming rose among thorns. It’s a beautiful, laid-back, simple, cheerful, colorful, and effortless game that you can spend as much time as you want playing, especially with your friends. Its main charm lies in its atmosphere and the way the game connects through your phone. That’s the magic I’ve been talking about all along. Besides, who doesn’t love a good battle and setting off on a fun-filled adventure with friends?

Sunderfolk isn't great if you play it on your own, but the experience with friends is fantastic and memorable.

Sunderfolk is a tactical co-op RPG from Secret Door. You play in the world of the Sunderlands, where you fight together against the threat of the Shadowstone. The game uses your phone or tablet as a controller, which provides clear controls, slightly different than normal. You use cards to perform attacks and spells, which makes the game strategic and varied. The One Shot Mode lets you play short, individual missions. Thanks to the beautiful design and fun controls, Sunderfolk is really a special video game. It is truly a great combination of a video game and a board game. Fun to play alone, but best together with your friends!

For newcomers, it's a perfect on-ramp, but others who dislike slow campaigns might not be convinced. It's inexpensive at $50, needing only one purchase for a group of four, and it's a great excuse for a weekly game night because of its couch co-op focus. Sunderfolk is a must-play game for you and your friends, whether you play it locally or online.

A highly enjoyable and entertaining multiplayer game that I would strongly recommend to fans of turn-based strategy and tabletop RPGs. Unfortunately, it doesn't have enough features for me to recommend it to those who don't already enjoy the genre.

Sunderfolk knows exactly what it wants to be: an accessible RPG experience that you share with friends. The controls on your phone are smart, the combat is tactical, and the world feels alive and full of choices. There’s no hassle of setting up a board or finding a dungeon master. The game is chock full of content, and for groups of friends who’ve always wanted to try a tabletop RPG but haven’t had the time or inclination to delve into the rules, Sunderfolk is a godsend. It may not be revolutionary in terms of visuals or mechanics, but it carves out a new niche. This should be the perfect introduction to both analogue and digital RPGs. But it still falls a bit short. The game is on the slow side and lacks some streamlining. The phones feel like a cool gimmick. The less than stellar visuals can be partly ignored, but the game simply doesn’t offer enough truly cool moments, whether as a video game or a board game.

Even with no obligation to continue playing, it’s still a game I’m compelled to return to. Between its intricate character classes, wonderful voice acting from Anjali Bhimani, and how the title balances teamwork and individual player freedom, Sunderfolk is a real gem.

Sunderfolk was not only what I needed right now but it executes everything with quality and precision. What it does with the app and multiplayer is sublime and everything about the gameplay experience is explained, trimmed to perfection and thoughtful. From the explanation of its keywords to its simplified systems, this is a dungeon crawler for everyone.
