How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Even with my expectations guarded, however, I did not expect just another survival/crafting game that used randomization as a crutch to the point of losing all potential personality...And I at least expected more to fu..ing do.”

“The act of playing the game isn't without its problems, as far as the tedium of having to pay for and fuel your ship and suit is concerned, and yet it's all in aid of enabling us to have an experience unlike anything a game has ever delivered, or one that we're ever likely to see again. This is the first game to ever make players truly feel as if they can boldly go where no one has ever gone before.”

“No Man's Sky is a truly unique game, unrivaled in both scale and complexity. If I had to find a synonym to describe this title, it would be the phoenix. Hello Games has done a great job, and it’s worth noting that all their expansions are completely free, the player community is welcoming, and you won’t encounter a single microtransaction. No Man’s Sky probably won’t thrill absolutely everyone, but it should be given a chance. Once it captivates you, it will be hard to tear yourself away from the screen.”

“The largely solitary experience of No Man's Sky is monotonous, easily frustrating and loses its charm way too early. For a game with the promise of all the wonders of the universe, it delivers so little.”

“No Man's Sky on Switch is a fantastic port of a game we genuinely didn't really believe would make the transition to Nintendo's console without some serious technical issues. Hello Games has made the necessary cutbacks and downgrades to get this intergalactic survival sandbox playing at a super solid frame rate and the colourful, chunky graphical style here ensures that it all still looks pretty fantastic to boot. With all of the game's previous updates and content included - barring multiplayer at this point - and a plethora of customisation options courtesy of the massive Waypoint update, this is an easy recommendation for survival fans and one of the most impressive ports we've seen on Switch to date.”

“A game, a promise, which sometimes turns into a pleasant surprise, while turning into a void at others. Void that, one day, might get filled by promises that the developers made, however it still captivated us to push forward and explore.”

“No Man's Sky is a very interesting experiment and a boring videogame. First hours are really pleasant but the magic disappears pretty quickly and you're left with a repetitive and uninteresting obligation to explore new planets. In time it could be something really good but right now it's flawed both on the technical and gameplay side (and the finale is disappointing to say the least). My expectations were shattered.”

“When a location in No Man’s Sky isn’t being observed, it doesn’t exist. It’s just the potential in its formula in a program (possibly on a disc). When we play it, it becomes a tiny thread in an actual vast universe.”

“Fluent space exploration videogames' dream comes true. No Man's Sky is an experiment that has its flaws when it comes to design, and you must always fight the randomness of its concept. Its creators made something unique and with unfathomable vastness. Probably, with a bigger team, with a bigger budget and with more ideas when it comes to variety in gameplay mechanics, we would be talking about a true revolution in this kind of entertainment. ”

“While No Man's Sky does suffer from some technical glitches that occasionally impact play, it's built on solid foundations, and it starts out feeling genuinely fresh and exciting. As it progresses, however, the experience peters out with the realisation that exploration is really all there is to do. Each piece of the journey only exists to further the journey itself, and there's no real reward except for additional opportunities for exploration, and any sense of personal achievement is wiped out. There's definitely something exciting about this infinite world, but infinity begins to look the same after a while.”

“Its main gameplay is simplistic but becomes totally engrossing, and the technical achievement is impressive. The atmosphere created by the graphics and sound is second to none, and there's an amazing sense of place. Some may struggle to find the fun with the lack of direction, and there are some technical issues that need addressing, but if you're able to create your own fun with the tools that you're given, you'll be playing this for a long time.”
