How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Drill Core is a good-looking game with a relatively unique combination of tower defense and resource management gameplay. It gives players plenty to work with once they're on the job, but unfriendly onboarding and clunky controls will prevent some from getting there.”

“Throws a lot of elements and ideas together, and it can work, but it also kind of gets in its own way with its controls and ironically lacks ultimate depth”

“Drill Core is roguelite mining at its finest but it also never manages to solve the problem of repetitive gameplay”

“Drill Core is one of the best surprises I’ve had in the management sim space. It blends the satisfaction of a well-planned strategy game with the real-time thrill of tower defence, all wrapped in a setting that feels both tongue-in-cheek and terrifying. For players who love to plan, build, and improvise under pressure, this is an easy recommendation. But even if you’re usually intimidated by these kinds of games, like I was, there’s a good chance Drill Core will win you over, too.”

“Drill Core is a stylish and accessible blend of tower defense and mining sim mechanics, wrapped in a sharp satirical skin that channels retro-futurist charm with gusto. Its loop is satisfying at first, but the lack of deeper complexity, slow pacing, and exploitable systems makes it easy to burn out after a few hours. For this reviewer, Drill Core was a fun first dig, but not one with much buried beneath the surface.”

“Drill Core is a fun and satisfying treat that can glue you to the screen for hours. A pleasant pixel art, and a tower defense system that leads to the creation of a real mobile fortress.”

“Drill Core blends mining sim, tower defense, and roguelite chaos into a tense, briskly tuned loop that rarely lets up. While longer sessions can feel a bit repetitive, its taut mechanics and ever-shifting variables make it a gem in terms of replay value.”

“Drill Core masterfully blends mining management with tower defense in a way that'll have you saying "just one more run" at 3 AM. The 1.0 release adds meaningful content and polish, though the grind and lack of tutorials might test your patience. Despite its flaws, this corporate space-mining sim delivers a uniquely satisfying gameplay loop that's hard to put down.”

“Overall, I enjoyed my time with Drill Core. Its approach to gameplay offers enough novelty, especially for someone like me who hasn’t been overly exposed to these genres. For better or worse, the game has some steep difficulty spikes. I found myself hitting a wall at the 8th difficulty level due to both the challenge and my growing fatigue. My experience could have been less tiring if the game had prioritized onboarding, providing more instructional guidance instead of relying so heavily on repetitive trial and error. Fortunately, I eventually found my rhythm, and most of my playthrough felt satisfying. Ultimately, Hungry Couch Games has demonstrated with Drill Core that they can create a solid game, and I will be looking out for their future projects.”
