How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (Metacritic) | – | 73 | 6 |
| Creator reviews (1 tracked) | – | 80 | 0 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 96% | 91 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 87 | 1 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 94% | 89 | 64 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 89.8, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 22,277 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“A very enjoyable racer. It's not a game you'll still be playing in a few years, but in the meantime its destructible racing at its best.”

“Flat Out 2 brings the same gameplay to the table the second time around, although it just doesn’t seem to have the same vibe as the original did.”

“FlatOut 2 seems a little too slick for its own good in spots, but it still manages to provide plenty of destructive racing fun.”

“FlatOut 2 drives a fine line, but manages to come out on the good side more often than not. It might be a good idea to tether that controller to your wrist, though, because it's possible you'll send it flying just as much as your driver.”

“Both more of the same and a little less. The challenges don’t hold their appeal for long and a lot of the problems from the first game have reappeared in this one, but anyone looking for a racing game that rewards you for knocking over fences and road signs will be hard pressed to find better.”

“FlatOut 2, as a racing game, is competent, but marred by a poor sense of speed. [Aug 2006, p.63]”

“The graphics and audio couple together really well for a kick-ass experience, and the gameplay and driving controls are solid.”

“One hell of a fun racing game. Sure, many of its elements feel a tad generic, like the track and character design, but what it really comes down to is the racing itself and Bugbear has done a great job at drawing a line between control and complete chaos.”

“The game features all of the best aspects of all of the best racing games of our youth, all packaged in kick-ass visuals and audio, and with online play to boot. Racing fans rejoice; FlatOut 2 is a total blast, and well worth every penny.”

“The game is still brilliant and the second coming gives another chance to all those people who wished they'd played the first - but there's something a little too familiar about it, and if you were refreshed by my change in approach, then you might find the lack of change in FlatOut 2 somewhat repetitive.”

“Flatout 2 is pretty much like the first "Flatout", which was pretty much like a poor man's "Burnout". [Sept. 2006, p.98]”

“It's quite honestly an astounding achievement in terms of the implementation of the physics, which should garner the franchise (and BugBear) further success. It's giant step forward from the original title of 2004.”
