How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Taken individually, Lootbound’s ideas are solid, even diverting. But developer ArtDock forgets the player in a game that tries to merge several genres without ever truly considering how those disparate concepts should interact with one another for a generic and repetitive experience.

Lootbound is a great, bite-sized roguelite that’s best enjoyed in short bursts. It’s addictive, sure, but its barebones storytelling, overreliance on luck, and early-game grind can sometimes get in the way. What ultimately carries the experience is its surprisingly deep buildcrafting, which should appeal to veteran roguelite fans while giving you plenty of freedom to shape your own journey through the loot you pick, party members you recruit, and bosses you face. It knows exactly what it wants to be, giving you just enough control to feel like a Dungeon Master while leaving enough to chance to make every victory feel earned, one roll at a time.

Lootbound highly impressed me with its simple yet expressive mechanics and its loot-focused, turn-based roguelike structure. Paired with its incredible art, vivid world, and interesting characters, and you have a game that is sure to stick with you long after you’ve beaten it. Lootbound is an experience that you’ll struggle to let go… much like that legendary but under-leveled piece of gear you’re hanging on to.

Lootbound is one of the best indie games of 2026 that excels in every aspect. The combat is tactical and satisfying. The atmosphere and art direction are captivating and represent dark fantasy extremely well. The gameplay loop is rewarding, and progression is well-balanced. The only thing holding it back is its lack of story and narrative support. Every run has a sense of purpose and feels different thanks to the RPG nature. Lootbound easily stands out as one of the best roguelite and turn-based games in recent memory.
