How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

While only lasting perhaps an hour, this tale of young love has enough charm and small diversions to make you smile

The Day I Became A Bird delivers a brief, quirky, and heartwarming experience that achieves a lot with very simple means. Frank remains a likeable protagonist: naive, sincere, and funny. The interactive picture book strikes a perfect balance between humour and emotion without ever becoming sentimental. On the gameplay side, it is deliberately straightforward, yet never boring.

What remains is a game that defies easy categorization, and that is perhaps the greatest compliment one could pay it. It is not a title for gamers seeking a challenge. It is something for quiet evenings, for time spent with your children, and for anyone who wants to briefly recall how the world felt when everything was still vast and wide open. *The Day I Became a Bird* is not a masterpiece of game mechanics, but it is a small, sincere work full of heart that does exactly what it sets out to do: put a smile on your face, if only for a moment.

The Day I Became a Bird is a hand-drawn visual novel game based on the children's book of the same name. Developed by Hyper Luminal Games, a studio based on Dundee, Scotland, the Day I Became a Bird (otherwise referred to as TDIBAB in this article) is a tale of love in its purest form. The love explored in this game was immersive and nostalgic, perfectly portraying the innocence of childhood and how every day moments can be tinted with wonder.

The Day I Became a Bird is an atmospheric, minimalist game that revolves around experience rather than challenge. With its dreamy visual style, subtle sound design and poetic storytelling, the game transports you into a tranquil, interpretive experience. The focus is on atmosphere, emotion and discovery, which makes it special, but not equally accessible for every player.

The Day I Became A Bird had me stuck as a sniffling, happy mess by the time I reached its end. It isn’t trying to be more complicated than its source material, but instead allows that tale of young love to flourish and fly just like its protagonists.

The Day I Became a Bird tells a sweet and tender short adventure, in a really cute picture book style, but beyond that it does little else.

The Day I Became a Bird is a wonderful adaptation of a delightful children’s graphic novel. The gameplay isn’t challenging, but it perfectly supports the concept of putting the story front and centre. The additional story elements that extend the gameplay also deepen the player’s connection with the story; they don’t feel like filler. I didn’t expect that a book could be adapted into a game with so much care for the original text while still creating something new. This is even true when the art style is changed to something more befitting of a game.
