How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

| All-time Steam reviews | 90% | 84 | 1000 |

“If it had controlled better and its "emotional" bullet points didn't come off like "sad indie game does a sad thing" convention, the potential is there for this to be an all-time great. As it is, RiME offers a fantastically designed world with some neat obstacles and a superb linear flow, held back by technicalities and instances of the banal.”

“The technical issues definitely knock it down some, as does the higher cost on Switch, but RiME still is good more often than not.”

“RiME is beautiful and emotional game that sometimes seems too constricted. The secrets and collectibles should encourage you to multiple playthroughs, but not in that case. Too simple puzzles and far-fetched psychological concept cause slight frustration. But you feel fuzziness from lengthy game stages, which could be a little shorter and a little more diverse.”

“Fans of ICO and Journey, rejoice! RiME, as expected, is a great addition to the list of amazing story-driven platformers. But if you want full experience, avoid spoilers on the Internet at all costs.”

“It wants to be more of a three-dimensional museum, one that carefully categorizes emotions, than a game.”

“Rime doesn't introduce new quality in the business of interactive storytelling but borrows good things from the best. You'll find echoes of The Last Guardian, Ico or Zelda, then you'll appreciate tons of passion, and in the end you will probably become very fond of this game and remember it for a long time.”

“Rime is a poetic and inspiring adventure game, but it's also a short game and not as surprising as we had expected when it comes to gameplay mechanics. The Spanish studio has demonstrated their taste when it comes to artistic and storytelling aspects, with a soul-crushing ending that will make you remember this journey for a long time to come.”

“In the end RiME is a game with lovely massive environments, a very appealing art style, and terrific music that together help build a strong base for an engaging experience. The implementation of the exploration and puzzles I would say is likely to boil down to taste, with some people appreciating the lack of a firm hand guiding you everywhere and others finding some elements needlessly confusing. While I appreciate the story the game set out to tell I’d say that it didn’t quite carry the impact it might have if I’d come to have a stronger connection to the main character, who generally doesn’t have a personality to latch onto. That all then ends up being mired in the game’s technical shortcomings as well. RiME is a game full of ambitions and promise, it just doesn’t quite deliver it all as well on the Switch as it might have. If you’re looking for an ambitious adventure I’d first recommend it on another platform but if you don’t have that option just understand the issues going in and you should still be able to thoroughly enjoy it.”

“All in all though, I had a wonderful time with Rime. Some fantastic visuals, solid gameplay overall, an outstanding soundtrack, and a narrative that, for me anyway, paid off tremendously by the close of proceedings.”

“If it weren't for some technical inconsistencies, such as the frame rate and the overly braindead platforming, Rime could be a perfect adventure game. There is so much love and care poured into it that can be seen and heard just by playing it, which makes it an extremely cathartic experience. It is not often that there is a video game that can result in such a positive emotional response and succeed as a legitimate fun video game, and for that, Tequila Works must be commended. Rime is every bit as good as the games that it was inspired by, and in some cases, it supersedes them.”

“Tequila Works' long-awaited title takes you on a heartfelt adventure through large, open areas full of personality and imaginative puzzles. Comparisons to the likes of Journey or ICO were inevitable, and while it can imitate a little too closely, it has just enough fresh ideas to set it apart. Its clean and colourful presentation is backed up by a truly excellent soundtrack, and the story conjures up some wonderful moments along its fairly brief duration. Those looking for a fun, cohesive, and original puzzle platformer could do far worse than investing some time in RiME.”

“Marvelous! No other adjective describes the quality of RiME more appropriately. It may seem a little slow paced for those who are searching for an adventure with more adrenaline and action, but for those searching for a different, emotional, beautiful (graphically and musically speaking), with a great story, you’ll have a great time with RiME. It’s going to be a journey you’ll remember for a long time.”
