How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Cladun Returns boasts great dungeon crawling with countless options for customization and optimization to take on any situation. It features a ~25 hour story campaign as well as endless side content. While combat is simple, the controls are responsive and the dungeon design is fun and increasingly challenging. Unfortunately, the game overall comes off as one-dimensional in this respect. It lacks any semblance of a narrative, and the small piecemeal levels and lack of a cohesive world don't offer much in terms of exploration or immersion. It is also graphically unsuitable for the PlayStation 4 and large TV displays. Those looking for a pure dungeon crawl with both roguelike and standard dungeons will find that Cladun Returns delivers way more than its fair share. Players looking for a more immersive, story-driven classic RPG experience should look elsewhere.”

“For anyone with a surplus of free time, Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku! is a fine way to exhaust it. The process of collecting gear and levelling up is familiar to action RPG fans, but this game introduces a number of ideas to keep things fresh. The Magic Circle system is very slick in how it offers a multitude of build varieties. New additions, like the option to take on quests, make exploration a little more rewarding. However, spending most of the adventure jogging through randomised dungeons does wear thin. This title's long-term value depends on how much its players enjoy the grind.”

“Cladun Returns: This Is Sengoku!'s bite-sized stages are best suited to quick stints of dungeon delving. Stay much longer, and you might stumble across the frustrations that lie in its depths. Bouts of trial and error gameplay drag down an otherwise addictive release, and convoluted upgrade systems keep you from getting straight into the action. Still, the process of powering up your pixelated protagonist is a rewarding one once you find your groove.”

“Cladun Returns is exactly what the series needed in order to make a successful comeback. Originally for the PSP, this newest entry is releasing for both the newer PlayStation handheld as well as the big box that sits in your living room. Conceptually Cladun hasn't changed all that much, as its scope still aims for small stages that are designed to be done in a minute or less. That is the core concept, at least in theory. In actuality Cladun is anything but small, with tremendous amounts of content that provide considerable replay value as you simultaneously grind for experience and tackle challenges within each stage in under the target time.”

“Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku is a fun and enjoyable game. It has little to no faults, it looks gorgeous, it also has a huge replay value with Co-op, and trying to beat your best times in dungeons. If you enjoyed games like The Binding Of Isaac then you will love this. While it may not be as difficult, it is still as fun.”

“Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku is the first in the series to hit the PS4 and continues the series tradition of providing players with high quality and surprisingly deep dungeon-crawling. The retro feeling of the game is enough for the nostalgic crowd to be happy, but the game feels modern enough for any fan of the dungeon-crawling genre to enjoy. Progress and enjoyment from the game can be derived from 10 minute sessions as well as 5 hour sessions. Cladun doesn't take itself seriously, so I recommend it both to people who want to min-max their RPG characters as well as to those who just want to blindly dungeon-crawl.”

“There is more to this game, a lot more, but I just don't care. Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku! can be played for hundreds of hours, but these are hours I want to spend with something I actually like. There are a lot of facets here, including quests I can take, a bizarre Fortify feature, an art studio where I can customize characters and gear, and time challenges for each of the dungeons that make up the story mode. Again, all of that I should enjoy, and yet it just does nothing for me. If you can get into this game, and I recommend you play the demo before you buy, you'll probably have a lot more fun than I did. Which is to say you'll have any amount of fun at all.”

“So long as you can accept your good with a little bit of less-than-good (I don’t even consider anything to be “bad”), then Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku is a free-spirited (literally!) and fun romp through Japan’s spirit world.”

“Cladun Returns: This is Sengoku! can offer a amusing challenge that scratches an addictive itch, but those will need to stomach some of its frustrations to find what makes it a good game and reap the rewarding gameplay after taking a few missteps inside its challenging dungeons.”
