How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“. Truly, my personal feeling is that it is simply not ready for sale at all. The game has some merits, and if this were an early working version of the final product I would certainly have focused much more heavily on those. As it stands, gamers are going to be disappointed if they part with real world money to play Rugby 18. Sorry rugby fans; I’d stick to Rugby Challenge for now if I was you. I think we are going to have to wait around for the next good one.”

“Though Eko Software has tried to give virtual rugby a breath of life, and in some ways, with a revamped control and camera system, it has, the lack of modes and dismal presentation leave a bad taste in the mouth. At full-price, Bigben is demanding an obscene amount of money for a game that feels years behind where it should be.”

“Rugby 18 is as painful to play as a Chris Robshaw blindside tackle.”

“Rugby 2018 is lacking of depth to reach the level of the best sports games.”

“Rugby 18 is a solid, workmanlike first effort at what is probably the most difficult sport to translate into a playable video game. It's not as easy to pick up or as slick as FIFA, but it puts in the hard yards and, for the most part, gets the job done. As a result, Rugby 18 is probably the best rugby game in 20 years.”

“The developers definitely had the passion for rugby when creating this title but it could have used with more testing, fixes and definitely a lot more features.”

“Rugby 18 is a very disappointing take on the sport in question. It plays as bad as it looks and is yet another knock-on in the world of rugby games.”

“This might only be for serious Rugby fans, but it's well executed to the point you can almost feel the mud on your face.”

“Poorly presented, and lacking in mode variety, Rugby 18 is salvaged by the fact that it's actually a pretty decent representation of rugby union on the pitch. It may not be the definitive version of the sport that the PS4 needs, but it's easily the best available.”

“Right now, there are just too many bugs, too many exploits, and just too little simulation of the best parts of the sport it tries to replicate for me to recommend Rugby 18.”
