How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 68 | 11 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 73% | 69 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 68 | 9 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 77% | 72 | 601 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“There’s no doubt that it’s a pretty epic survival adventure experience, but it feels a bit compromised on the Switch”

“Outward: Definitive Edition keeps its proposal intact on Switch and adds new content to the existing DLC to make the experience the most complete. Its level of demand and constant saving continue to make it one of the toughest and most surprising adventure games in the current catalog.”

“I can’t convey just how impressed I was with Outward Definitive Edition. I would have been happy with a standard THQ Nordic styled remastered collection, but it was so much more. It was almost on the same level as the Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, which I still hold as the gold standard of re-releases. There was so much love and care poured into every part of it, and in many ways it feels like a brand new game.”

“Outward: Definitive Edition is the only version recommended right now for those wanting to experience the game for the first time. The lack of technical improvements and prominent additions end up making the game unattractive to previous players.”

“So, while Outward is certainly a port with limitations due to the platform, I’m not entirely sure I would have enjoyed it any more on any other console. Yes, there is a joy to being dropped in a big world and left to carve your own journey through it. Outward is a fundamentally appealing experience. The problem for Outward is that there other games that have done that with much more soul.”

“Outward Definitive Edition is a very reliable proposal for fans of survival and worlds derived from medieval western fantasy. Surviving in this world is an arduous task that will only be within the reach of those who make the greatest effort.”

“Unfortunately, the definitive edition of Outward has not been able to redeem the original work in its entirety, because it has basically maintained its same strengths and weaknesses.”

“Outward: Definitive Edition could be a great opportunity to breathe new life into a great game, but its next-gen release is marred by annoying glitches not present in the original version.”

“If you are looking for a survival RPG, Outward has something interesting to say, but be prepared to face some of its flaws.”

“This game has me super excited. I really am enjoying it, and as much as I do feel it is amazing, I feel it could still be better. This has probably been the thing I wracked my brain over the most as good and fun as it is, there was always something missing. Something not quite complete. Even now I am having trouble putting my finger on it. It is like every aspect that you could rate this game is only just off a perfect score. Maybe if it had a slightly bigger budget, or if it was backed by another studio or company that could have funded it more, I do not know that could have hurt it.”

“There's not much here to really dazzle, but if you haven't yet played it, Outward Definitive Edition has a lot to like for RPG and survival fans.”

“An ambitious game that punches above its weight with unique RPG systems, survival mechanics and co-op support - and a lot of heart.”
