How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“We didn't find any hints about new strong LiS 2 female characters in The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. Of course, it's unlikely that Chris will be the protagonist of the story, but if Life Is Strange 2 is too fixated on family problems, and the plot moves toward the team of superhero children with minimal interactivity, then LiS 2 definitely is not the game that we were waiting for.”

“The only problem with Dontnod being so good at what they do is that, sometimes, they're a little too good.”

“The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit thoughtfully examines a troubled childhood through the eyes of the 10-year-old living it. This non-linear episode encourages you to explore, refraining from beating you over the head with its difficult subject matter. It's building into something, and it's hard to determine exactly what that is with DONTNOD being so coy about its plans for the sequel. You need to really dig into this to get anything out of it, and while we found the backstories of the small cast to be well thought out, it's hard to know what purpose they will serve yet.”

“If The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit cost a bit of money, we'd still highly recommend it. The fact that it's totally free means it's elevated to a must-play, even if you have no plans on playing Life Is Strange 2 - and if you're considering it, play this now. Any minor quibbles we might have, like some interactive points not being obvious, drop away when you remember that it's free.”

“The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is an easy recommendation for Life is Strange fans as well as for those who have never touched the series before. Clocking in at 90 minutes, the episode can easily be completed in a single sitting; the episode's characters, on the other hand, will stay with you long after you put down the controller. If you have a free afternoon and some space on your hard drive, you have no excuse: Give Captain Spirit a whirl. It's free.”

“rather enjoyed my time with The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. It’s essentially what you come to expect from Life is Strange condensed into a two-ish hour experience that isn’t going to cost you anything to play all the way to the end. It’s very obviously a prequel to something much bigger, and it ends a little abruptly which I found a little disappointing, as I was ready to play for another couple hours. What it has achieved is make me excited for LiS 2, more than I ever was before. I still have no real clue what the sequel might be, or how this plays into its story, but for now this was a touching experience I’m really appreciative of.”

“The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit efficiently sets the stage for Life is Strange 2 with more player choices, more object interactions, and more secrets to uncover than ever before despite its short length.”

“A worthy (and free) successor to Life is Strange, and an intriguing teaser for the full sequel. Dontnod have improved on most accounts and look to draw in new fans with this prologue.”

“The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit expands the Life is Strange universe with an intimate story about imagination and loss.”

“The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is light on actual awesome adventuring, but it certainly has the spirit of Life Is Strange throughout and shows a notable maturity and nuance in its depiction of a troubled household.”
