How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Amnesia: Rebirth is one of the best horror games available today, despite few small bugs it contains. In any case, what wrongs it the most is the painfully slow start.”

“Amnesia: Rebirth has a compelling story, grim atmosphere and a solid fusion of gameplay and storytelling. But it just can't quite reach the heights of SOMA.”

“Amnesia: Rebirth is a horror roller coaster that flies by, even if parts of the narrative and the game's stealth and physics system aren't always up to task. It has a lot on its mind and is never afraid to give the player a new encounter and eschew a previous idea entirely. Chances are that by the end of the game, you'll have plenty to remember.”

“At times the game can feel too scripted, and its approach to "game overs" is dubious, but in general it delivers the scary scenes and disturbing atmosphere Frictional fans have come to expect.”

“Distinctly different from its predecessor Dark Descent, it has some narrative pull and tense moments, but if you’re hoping for horror, you’ll need to look elsewhere”

“Amnesia: Rebirth is a fitting third entry to the Amnesia series that takes its unique lore and runs with it in a respectable way. If you’re looking for a creepy game to play in October that won’t overload you with jump scares, Amnesia: Rebirth is a worthwhile pick.”

“With wonderful voice acting and atmospheric presentation that keeps you immersed and on the edge of your seat, Amnesia: Rebirth manages to provide an exciting experience. Of course, there are a few downsides. It's not as scary as previous offerings, the AI can be a little clumsy, and the weak conclusion to the story will leave you wanting more.”

“For the few things Amnesia: Rebirth gets right, there is a mountain of reasons why it feels like Frictional Games is still stuck in 2010. This hide and seek style of gameplay has long outstayed its welcome and the game doesn't do enough to lessen the disappointing impact that brings. It's heartbreaking to say, but after the fantastic SOMA, maybe the Swedish developer shouldn't have bothered returning to what it thinks it knows best.”

“Another quality horror game from the masters of the genre, but it's not their best work.”

“While this is certainly a return to form for the franchise, the game doesn't quite escape the shadow of the original, with the forced narrative aspects sometimes overtaking gameplay. Nevertheless, when judged by its own merits, Amnesia: Rebirth is a quality horror title made by passionate developers out to tell a disturbing story. At the end of the day, I'd recommend this one to any horror fan up for some interactive Cosmic Horror this Halloween season.”

“Amnesia: Rebirth is a game that deserves the name of the series with its gripping story and exquisite design. Anyone who loves horror games should buy and play.”

“I didn’t hate Rebirth, but I also wish I’d liked it more than I did. While I do recognize that my own bias likely played a part in that, I also recognize that the characters, the story, and the settings were just, quite frankly, not that interesting to me in general. I felt that parts of Rebirth overstayed their welcome, and that parts of it felt shoehorned in as an attempt to diversify and distance itself from its predecessors. That being said, it does also effectively build upon past entries in a lot of ways, and I would absolutely recommend that fans of Frictional’s other games give it a shot. You likely won’t be disappointed, but you may find yourself underwhelmed. As for myself, I doubt I’ll be revisiting the Algerian desert any time soon.”
