How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 84 | 30 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 88% | 82 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 97% | 93 | 5 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Dreamscaper is a randomly generated dungeon crawler with fun combat, breath-taking design and a premise that is both moving and expertly woven into the mechanics and structure of the game.”

“I wouldn’t say that this is a bad game, but it’s also not a game I can honestly recommend, at least in its current state. There’s obviously a good base here, but a lot of the core game elements just don’t have the depth that they really need to warrant playing the game while its in Early Access.”

“Dreamscaper has great gameplay mechanics, immersive and addictive gameplay, beautiful environments, enjoyable music, deep thought, and most importantly, passionate developers who give 200% to the title. The constant updates and listening to the community's feedback show how much time and love is put into this project. The affordable price is another plus that makes this engaging adventure almost a cinch to enjoy. Smaller details may still be tweaked by the developers before the full game is released, so I'm curious to see how far Dreamscaper will go in the future. However, I already find the title almost polished.”

“Dreamscaper really is rather good; this is a game that certainly deserves more attention than it’s received. What it lacks in originality, it makes up for in heart. A surprisingly emotional story, rewarding progression system, snappy combat, and painterly visuals make for an experience that we’d suggest you give a serious look.”

“If you haven’t played a good roguelite title in a while, here’s a chance for something new and original. While not perfecting the genre in any sense, Dreamscaper manages to be original and fun, yet a slightly repetitive game. An atmospheric roguelite experience that won’t blow your mind but may surely make your day.”

“While the gameplay provides a strong loop that makes it easy to jump in, it’s the immersive atmosphere that grabs hold and keeps players engaged for multiple runs. The emotional struggles of the characters resonate, and there are important messages about how helpful the support of others can be.”

“Afterburner Studios enters the gaming world with a very strong roguelite that has the gameplay to rival its ambition.”

“As a bit of a roguelike action/shooter junkie I'm always fascinated to see new titles come into the fold that are determined to do things their own unique way...”

“For an unknown studio they come out swinging pretty good with Dreamscaper, the core game is fairly engaging and interesting, but the core loop has some serious progression issues, as well as bad difficulty balance. Trying new moves and weapons is the highlight of the experience, but the very slow lack of progress and difficulty walls hold this back from being truly great.”

“The literature tells you you’re getting stronger and doing well, so do the people around you. But is that something you can perceive in the thick of it? All you can do is take it a day at a time, and do what you can. Am I talking about the game or real life? That question shows us Dreamscaper’s success at its thematic goals.”

“Dreamscaper is a rogue-lite game with an attractive story. It also has excellent actions and upgrade systems.”
