How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“The Suicide of Rachel Foster is well constructed when it comes to design and mechanics, but is let down if you stop to examine the plot for a moment. The deeper into the game you get, the more it feels like it's trying to shock rather than effectively engage with serious topics.”

“Topics of grooming and sexual abuse are here but distorted into a bizarre romanticized narrative that not only undermines the ideas, it actually damages the game’s credibility. I really wanted to like Suicide of Rachel Foster and I think games as an interactive medium are actually well-equipped to tell these hard-hitting and difficult stories, but not from this perspective. Whether on purpose or not, the tone-deaf narrative promises to tackle these subjects diligently but does nothing of the sort. Instead, Suicide Of Rachel Foster is a game in serious need of a rewrite and difficult to recommend in its current state.”

“The Suicide of Rachel Foster is a beautiful, promising introduction and a slow, meaningless story with minimal interactivity, far-fetched mysticism, and a frustrating ending. All that can sweeten a failure is the graphics, but there are also drawbacks. If you love a good and deep detective adventures, your princess certainly is in another castle.”

“Sad story of the tragedy and the truth behind it. Intriguing 'till the last minute.”

“In my opinion, this game is not for weak characters, people suffering from some kind of phobia and, as you will be warned before playing, people suffering from psychological or mental problems. The game has a strong story, a creepy atmosphere and will definitely not make you feel completely comfortable. As well as that, you'll be treated to perfect sound and realistic visuals. The Suicide of Rachel Foster is a fascinating, moving and mature tale of love and death.”

“The Suicide of Rachel Foster builds an environment with depth, intrigue and genuine atmosphere, surrounding you with sound and visual design that immediately immerses you. But its boundless potential is not seen to fruition, and ultimately the game fails to move past the narrative clichés of the first-person narrative genre.”

“The Timberland did a fantastic job at grasping my initial attention to uncover its dark secrets, but I felt quite relieved to check out as soon as I could.”

“The story of Rachel's suicide hit us in the heart, not so much for the plot (which we followed with extreme interest anyway) but for the practical rendering of the negative human psychological aspects, such as suffering and the inability to accept the past and it does so through a flawless, out-of-the-box audio and graphics that will challenge your own suggestion.”

“As even the mention of suicide for some people, whether tied to their direct struggles or to those they love, can be problematic, I'm always leery of games that put it right out front...”

“It’s difficult to give a score to The Suicide of Rachel Foster. I could have loved this game. And I did really enjoy it, right up until the last moment. It was everything I wanted in a walking sim. Creepy, atmospheric, with interesting characters and a rich, detailed environment. But it was ultimately let down by the end of the story, which mishandles a pretty sensitive topic, and left me feeling disappointed and frustrated.”

“Anyone who likes walking simulators or solid mysteries will likely be satisfied with The Suicide of Rachel Foster. It's got a well-written story and is set in a convincing location. It's also very easy to blow through in a single evening in lieu of watching a similar movie.”

“I know it may seem difficult to believe, but I didn’t actually hate the game. Aside from the issues I have with it from a narrative standpoint, it was fine, and therein lies my struggle to recommend it outright: It’s just fine. There is nothing particularly special or interesting or revolutionary in The Suicide of Rachel Foster that you couldn’t get in any other walking simulator without having to simultaneously excuse a story that explores predatory behaviour in a way that is questionable at best, and seriously harmful at worst.”
