How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Metal: Hellsinger could be the perfect genre entry, but the obvious lack of the sense of proportion made it just good enough.

The game’s reign in blood is short, but unique and brutal enough to make it one of the most refreshing FPS titles in recent memory.

Metal: Hellsinger is not a particularly long game, but it is incredibly fun while it lasts. The unique rhythm-based combat is a lot of fun, especially as the heavy metal music picks up the better you do against the demon hordes.

Metal: Hellsinger is definitely worth your time. Because of the music, the carnage, and the very unusual gameplay with tons of potential (even though it is a short game).

It merges the frenetic gunplay and challenge of Doom with the rhythmic precision of Guitar Hero in a way that feels natural. And when you’re feeling the zone where every dodge and shot is pumping in perfect rhythm, you’ll be singing an epic tune that’s nothing short of pure metal.

I can't recommend Metal: Hellsinger enough. Its badass presentation, satisfying gunplay and genre-defining soundtrack prop up an otherwise solid rhythm game to new heights. Sure, the cracks that come from a limited budget and small team show here and there, but those cracks are so hair-thin that its ripping score and tight loop cover them up in style.

Metal Hellsinger never sets out to offer endless hours of gameplay at all costs or who knows variety or emphasis on storytelling, not even breathtaking visuals, but when you throw yourself into its insane riot of heart-pounding shootouts and heavy metal music you can be sure you will come out satisfied.

From the niche concept alone you can tell this music rhythm FPS mash-up is more than just a monetary opportunity; it's a passion project for the developers and seeing it all together. I can't help but say they have done a fantastic job at creating a solid game.

Though a lacklustre story and uninspired enemy variation may bring it down somewhat, Metal: Hellsinger is the best a rhythm FPS has ever felt.

Metal: Hellsinger takes the familiar thirst for blood of the genre and runs with a familiar hellish theme as seen in titles like DOOM, but an innovative fresh take on the FPS category with a layered rhythm approach makes the adventure enjoyable from start to finish. The soundtrack is utterly awesome, and while it might not be to everyone's taste it should certainly satiate metal fans everywhere. Unfortunately, the downside is its brevity, with everything on offer taking an average eight hours, at best, to get through all of the content available. There is no doubt though that developer The Outsiders has left this reviewer thirsty for more.

The game is great, I only regret that it’s not longer.

The game itself will speak to a very niche group. Because, as everyone knows, metal music is not the most popular thing in the world. But for those who like it, I can tell you that you will have a great time. The game is still short for its price but the interest is always to improve your score in this type of game. This makes it possible to come back to it more than once. And it allows us to know the lyrics of the songs and to appreciate the artists. Lots of headbanging to be expected!
