How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Praetorians, HD Remaster brings this once-successful RTS back with a new HD makeover, making it more visually appealing to today’s players. However, in addition to its improved visuals, the game also carries over the same flaws found in the original. Despite its shortcomings, it’s an enjoyable RTS that can really challenge the minds of die-hard strategists. Unfortunately, many modern players will find the game lacking in dynamism and rather tedious.

The Praetorians is a valuable and respectable work in the style of RTS strategy, which is not well reconstructed and the lack of adequate improvements makes the game a poorer experience by today's standards.

‎The double pack Commandos 2 & Praetorians: HD Remaster offers two classics of the strategy of the legendary Spanish studio Pyro Studios, which return completely renewed in high definition, new tutorials, campaign missions and compatibility with controls in the console versions. In addition, it includes an integrated version of the Praetorians, HD Remaster multiplayer mode.‎

This classic strategy combo reminds us of the greatness of what once was, however the remaster work is vague and lacks care, on the plus side the multiplayer works fine.

Praetorians HD Remaster is a classic RTS game in all its merit, but also in all its limitations, especially considering the PlayStation 4 version and the features of the DualShock 4 and the couch player. It has its advantages, but suffers in all aspects, narrative, audiovisual and gameplay, to dialogue with the current moment, even though it belongs to a relatively rare genre on consoles today.

A dry, unchallenging game that needed a proper remake far more than an underwhelming remaster. While it is refreshing to have a game like Praetorians on PS4, it'd be a bit more refreshing if it was a good one.

I'm having a hard time directly recommending this game. Classic fans are going to love the HD remaster, but newcomers, especially ones to the RTS genre, are going to be in for a tough time. It's got a deceptively tough learning curve, and it's not very forgiving, but it's also a challenging and engaging game. Plus, who doesn't love being the Roman Empire and rolling over your enemies? If you're looking to reclaim some classic glory, go with this Praetorians, but otherwise, this might be one to miss. I should mention that during my time with the game, I never saw any multiplayer games active.

Praetorians HD may not be as advanced or detailed as games that have come since but it is an incredibly effective throwback and one I greatly enjoyed.

Praetorians HD Remaster is a huge strategy game, which I recommend to every fan of the genre. Visually it's very powerful today, and the remastering makes it even more spectacular. If you want to relive the conquests of Rome, it is still one of the best options available.

It's a tough call as to whether to recommend the game or not. I think what it boils down to is, did you like the original game but have trouble getting it to play now, if so then certainly this is a great purchase for you. Do you like the older style RTS games with less minute detail to focus on and a stripped back easier mechanic, then this might tickle your fancy. But if you need absolutely all the bells and whistles, to have complete control over everything and the most up to date state of the art… then perhaps give it a miss.

Is the higher resolution worth ten denarii, citizen? I wish I could say so. Praetorians HD Remaster looks better than its predecessor, but honestly, still looks like a mobile game I’d find in a promoted tweet, alongside a vague imperative like “defend your empire!”.
