How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Siege Survival: Gloria Victis has a fresh feel and offers a nice insight into the medieval castle defence from the perspective of the ordinary citizens trying to survive at any cost while supporting the soldiers defending the walls. However, the game revolves around the principle of securing food and water as quickly as possible, gathering materials and sending them to the defenders. While these activities are entertaining, thanks mainly to the variety of tools, they become very repetitive after a while. Furthermore, the inability to defend yourself a little better with your chosen townsman when confronted with an enemy patrol takes away from the more action-packed enjoyment of the game, which will hopefully change a little when the game is released and there's a chance to use the catapult. Thus, the revival of the stereotype also lies in the various moral decisions you will make as you play, which will affect lives in the game.

The strength of Gloria Victis: Siege Survival comes from an unusual mix of strategy, stealth, and narrative. The game is polished, quite pretty, with a clean interface, lacks bugs, and offers multiple options for setting the difficulty level. Siege Survival may be a small game, but it has a heart.

Your enjoyment of Siege Survival Gloria Victis will depend on how much you like to see human suffering. Sieges are often hellish and hopeless experiences and that’s reflected well in this game. This really feels like a survival game with strategy and resource management elements, so the gameplay isn’t good enough to make up for the overall depressing tone of the game.

Siege Survival: Gloria Victis has several mechanics and concepts that look good on paper. Unfortunately, general clunkiness when it comes to the UI and controls, as well as a lack of attachment to your characters, lead to a rather uninspired romp. Once you're finished with a single playthrough, there's barely anything that's interesting to look forward to.

Siege Survival: Gloria Victis is a good game with beautiful storytelling. However, it can be annoying in some matters.

In conclusion, Siege Survival: Gloria Victis isn’t for everyone. If you are looking for a punishing game to sink a few weekends into then go for it. There are players out there who like the idea of being able to screw themselves to the point of having to restart from scratch. If on the other hand that feels too daunting for you, I can understand. But for those interested in what they see, Siege Survival: Gloria Victis can offer you a fun if somewhat depressing time for a cheap price.

Gloria Victis: Siege Survival is a tactical management game revolving around holding out against a Viking army. It’s visceral, challenging, engaging, and fun to play. It suffers from some technical and contextual issues while also lacking clarity but it’s still manageable. Any game can give you the power to destroy, but this one gives you the strength to survive.

"The title offers us a clear progression, where we always see consequences of what we are doing."

Siege Survival's focus is on realism and the complexity of the management: it's a good game, but it needs some expertise in the genre to be fully appreciated.

Siege Survival: Gloria Victis is a game that manages a sort of reverse synergy. The parts should combine to make this a medieval version of This War of Mine, a title that so clearly inspired it, but sadly fall short due to issues like limited replay value, lacking the emotional investment, despite the world and characters being decent enough. Still, for every negative, there are positives. Exploring the city at night for resources can be very tense; siege defence is engaging, and the crafting is top-notch. Consider this a recommendation, but one with more than a few caveats.

There are times where Siege Survival: Gloria Victis is clunky with its interface or systems, though it’s not enough to be a deterrent. It’s a game that lacks some polish, and could be cleaned up in patches. A lot of this game draws comparisons to This War of Mine, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it just lacks the heart that game had. Siege Survival: Gloria Victis is lean on content and low on replayability, and without more scenarios available, makes it hard to recommend fully.

Siege Survival: Gloria Victis is a thoroughly brutal mix of simulation and roguelike. It’s more narrow focus may alienate those wanting a more complete management and strategy title, but may interest others. It’s only for those who want an unforgiving experience and are happy to labour not for a glorious kingdom, but for one more day of desperate survival. If you want a darker simulation title then you’ll find Siege Survival: Gloria Victis is gritty enough to clear a snowed-in driveway in Antarctica.
