How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“While Village doesn’t reinvent the wheel in the way its predecessor did, it serves as an important stabilizer for the series. It puts Resident Evil on steady ground for the future, one I can’t wait to see.”

“Resident Evil Village is just about the right length, bringing together the best parts this franchise has to offer into one cohesive, neat little package.”

“Resident Evil Village is a loud and bombastic game, paired with an over the top story, a great set of characters, and really impressive visuals. The more action-oriented gameplay approach in the latter half may leave a bitter taste to the more orthodox fans of the series, but nevertheless, Village is on its way to becoming one of the best games this year has to offer.”

“The eighth Resident Evil game tried something that may seem like a really bad idea. In the end, though, not everything is as black and white and the developers managed to deal with the painful and challenging path before them. Resident Evil Village can not only count itself as one of the best games of the year, but also as one of the best games of the series.”

“Resident Evil Village is a classic sequel to its predecessor. It is bigger, brighter, and more action-packed. Some horror fans could be disappointed, but nonetheless Village is a well-crafted mix of Resident Evil 4 and 7.”

“The game branches the series out in new directions without trying to fix what wasn’t broken about its predecessor.”

“Resident Evil Village: Gold Edition is a high-quality game, though its appeal is somewhat diminished by minor technical glitches in cutscenes, terribly tedious loops, and an imbalance between different sections of gameplay. However, the expansion has greatly enhanced the main campaign by adding a third-person perspective, which I view positively despite its minor flaws. Shadow of Rose, on the other hand, is a real treat that complements the story of Resident Evil Village and at least somewhat appeases the frustrated die-hard fans of the entire series. While the retreat of survival horror elements is still noticeable, it is nonetheless a horror game adorned with incredibly high-quality graphics and a fantastic soundtrack. Personally, I would have appreciated more screen time for the villains, but that’s something that can be forgiven, just as the fact that if the game were named differently, it wouldn’t make a difference at all.”

“A more interesting setting and still-fun gameplay can't stop Resident Evil Village from getting in its own way and being more of the same.”

“Resident Evil: Village is an excellent continuation of the mainline Resident Evil series that pays homage to Resident Evil 4 while showcasing its own style and identity. The first-person perspective allows for some truly terrifying moments (though a third-person mode is also on the way in the Winters' Expansion DLC) and the boss encounters are some of the best in the entire series. Of course, running via the cloud means you'll likely come across some hiccups, along with some dodgy load times and potential slowdown. Our experience with this was pleasantly minimal compared to other cloud versions we've played, but be sure to test the demo for yourself. If you've only got access to a Switch, this is a pretty solid way to experience a great game.”

“Resident Evil Village tells a memorable story filled with action-packed scenarios, moments of trepidation, & an overall euphoric experience.”

“RE: Village is a mixture of almost all previous Resident Evil elements, making the most of both survival horror and puzzle intensity, but with the primary stage being left for the more action-like nature of Resident Evil 4. It has some great story moments, sprinkled with a few lacklustre characters that are still overshadowed by its most notable characteristic, most detailed environment to date.”

“Resident Evil Village is a crown jewel in this ever-evolving series. The developers have combined elements from the two most prominent installments - 4 and 7 and added lots of new, interesting ideas. Then, they topped all this with a thick sauce of fantastic art direction and, behold! We got one of the best Resident Evil games and survival horrors in general.”
