How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Deathloop is a fun, vibrant shooter with an excellent art direction and a stunning soundtrack. For a game all about replayability though, this has a surprising lack of it once you’ve broken the loop.

Consistency is the mother of mastery. And DEATHLOOP is another consistent release of Arkane Studios. For newcomers this game can serve as a great entry point to the Arkane portfolio. While all the hadcore fans will surely get what they expect from this title, even with this new and experimental format. There's no better place for experiments than in the endless time loop, after all.

Despite some technical and gameplay imperfections, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous is a gripping CRPG.

It’s worth noting that the main mechanical difference between Deathloop and Dishonored is that you can kill without moral consequence here. That’s liberating, but while it’s nice, and hilarious, that kicking enemies into the ocean is such a key part of Deathloop’s gameplay, there isn’t a whole lot that’s interesting about that. For a stealthy FPS that prides itself on the steady accumulation of power and understanding, the game also rarely makes either one feel particularly exhilarating. But, in the end, Deathloop’s almost perversely ironic saving grace is that it’s populated with charismatic weirdos who are just as irked about that as you are.

Following the success of Dishonored, the developers at Arkane slightly updated their proven formula and incorporated it into an original take on roguelike gameplay. In terms of gameplay, you won’t find anything entirely new here, just the same incredibly fun combat/stealth system. Blackreef is a joy to explore, and the desire to uncover everything will carry you to the end without the slightest difficulty. The developers could perhaps have been a bit bolder and overhauled the gameplay more, and they could have toned down the linearity as well. But why complain when Deathloop works so well?

Everything about Deathloop is so clever and well balanced. Discovering Blackreef and all of its mysteries will stick with me for a long time.

Continuing their tradition of making great Immersive Sims, Deathloop is a strong new addition to Arkane's roster of games.

Deathloop was an awe-inspiring experience, and as such, it’s a guaranteed candidate to the Game of the Year award. The game brings everything you can wish for, a great story, a world full of secrets begging to be discovered, unique characters, satisfying combat and puzzles, and timeless audiovisuals. Instant classic!

The way Deathloop presents the player with mystery, and allows them to uncover it at their own pace, is fantastic. It is easily one of the most enjoyable games I’ve played this year.

While I can nitpick about Deathloop's shortcomings, I'd rather just point you to a game that's a joy to play, confident in itself, touts two wonderful Black leads, looks wonderful, and rewards you for thinking outside the box. While it doesn' quite feel like an evolution of the formula, it's almost assuredly Arkane's most feature-complete and refined take on it. Like I said at the top of this review, Deathloop is countless things, and most of them are great.

While Deathloop is overall entertaining thanks to its own way to slowly unfold the narrative around Blackreef with well crafted level design. It is held back by its terrible AI, lack of weapon variety and boring stealth.
