How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Unfortunately, I did encounter a good amount of bugs and glitches in my playthrough. That being said, most of these issues were quickly resolved by restarting at the most recent checkpoint. The developers are aware of issues.Considering the demo portion was much improved in the final version of the game in such a short time, I do believe they will work out the kinks pretty quickly. Be aware that the console versions are a little behind the Steam version in production, so they are more likely to have more problems at this time. Steam is where I played for this review.”

“The seemingly strong foundations of Arctic Awakening's opening give way like an icy lake with one too many cracks. Where the narrative struggles with inconsistent performances and an underwhelming concluding chapter, the music and visuals elevate and lift the experience far beyond its basic walking simulator beats. Even if you may take a freezing bath or two along the way, I'd still recommend daring the trip across the Arctic for the sights and sounds alone.”

“Arctic Awakening delivers a short, atmospheric mystery: as a walking simulator you trek through gorgeous, music-driven landscapes, engage in thoughtful exchanges with Alfie, scavenge food and tools (with even “useless” items aiding Kai), and make choices that shape the ending, held back only by slightly clunky first-person climbing and minor bugs/clipping.”

“Arctic Awakening is an interesting story-driven adventure game that does a great job at creating a mood and delivering an emotional tale. The game's best features are its graphic design, emotive music, and the way Kai and Alfie's relationship grows. The branching choices let you see several endings, and the story is well-paced with five chapters.”

“It takes something special for me to love a walking sim and trust me there are some really good ones out there. Arctic Awakening does fine, and I’d hear an argument to include it within top contenders. For me though, what holds it back is the length and the slowness that comes with it. Technical bugs aside, Arctic Awakening is worthy title in the genre however and fans should keep an eye out.”
