How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 79 | 176 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 48% | 51 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 42 | 197 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 42% | 46 | 61 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Right now, Civilization 7 is an incomplete and reduced version of the game, which is plagued by many issues. However, you can feel that under all this mess, a good game might be hiding.”

“The release of Sid Meier's Civilization VII in its raw state has further tarnished Firaxis' reputation. And we recommend players to pick up the full edition of Civilization VI, which will give hundreds of hours of fun right now.”

“Sid Meier's Civilization VII brings a fresh perspective to the series and attempts to overcome many of the shortcomings of the previous installments. The game is more nimble, clearer, and more complex than ever before. Still, it's not exactly welcoming to new players.”

“Even among more complex mechanical failings like the mind-numbing repetition of its awful religion system, the greatest flaw of Civilization VII is simply how bad it is at communicating with the player. If it’s still capable of sucking you in for hours on end, this latest entry in the storied franchise too often feels like a game that’s engaging in spite of itself.”

“Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is a triumph in the turn-based strategy series and takes the franchise to a new level. Thanks to improved diplomacy, deeper gameplay, and technical innovations, it is one of the best entries in the franchise’s history. Although some changes may come as a surprise to longtime fans, most of them contribute to a better gaming experience, such as the reduction in the number of workers, which I have to acknowledge as a positive. However, natural disasters and the hardships following the Information Age are, for me, obstacles I cannot overlook. A major advantage, though, is that there’s no difference here between a newcomer and a series veteran. This game is accessible to absolutely everyone, and thanks to its enormous variety, every fan will enjoy it. I can guarantee that.”

“Civilization VII does what Civilization does. A new version of one of the greatest strategy games around. Some might say accept no substitute.”

“There's an outstanding game in Sid Meier's Civilization VII just waiting to burst free, but it's trapped under a wet, slimy coating of bugs and a mostly-finished interface. What we have on Switch is a phenomenal game that could be one of the absolute finest in its genre, a true monolith of game design and a delight for all fans of turn-based shenanigans, but its laundry list of launch-day bugs and issues pulls it from the peak it could have reached. It's great as it stands, but with more development time could have been utterly seminal.”

“Civilization 7 is a very pretty and very chaoitc game. Brave but not thought out. It introduces changes that aren’t inherently bad, and they build an interesting foundation for a probably great game in the future. Unfortunately now we got an early access production for a premium access price.”

“Despite some minor nitpicks, Civilization 7 is an outstanding addition to the series. It successfully streamlines certain mechanics while adding fresh layers of strategy, making it an excellent entry point for newcomers without alienating long-time fans. The new leader/civilization system, the variety of playstyles, and the dynamic nature of disasters and transitions between ages all help keep the experience engaging.”

“The legendary Civilization saga returns with this highly anticipated installment, staying true to many of the elements that built its reputation while attempting to innovate, often in the worst ways. Some new features, like 'historical eras,' are not inherently bad ideas but currently disrupt the otherwise tight gameplay flow.”

“Civilization VII succeeds in delivering a highly immersive and enjoyable experience that honors the series’ grand legacy, with an excellent dynamic map and a very engaging resource economy system. At the same time, however, the game suffers from some very disappointing aspects, particularly in its roster of leaders and a combat system that remains overly simple and lacking in depth.”

“Once the one that would show the industry how things should be done, Civilization VII is an unpolished, pale imitation of what a Civilization instalment should be. There are a myriad of problems with this, but the biggest one is that the wonderful feeling of freedom for which the series was always known for is now completely gone, as players are forced to go down very specific paths in every single match. Unless there’s a very, very big sale, it would be best to stay away from this bundle of disappointment.”
