How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Gothic is an idiosyncratic and sometimes stale remake, with a multitude of technical issues. Yet the purity and strength of the original game’s vision shines through.

Alkimia Interactive has crafted a faithful remake that captures what made the original a genre-defining masterpiece: a genuinely reactive world that respects player freedom. Gothic 1 Remake is flawed in specific, addressable ways, the combat plateau, magic balance, lockpicking frustration, compressed endgame, but none of those flaws undercut what the game fundamentally achieves. The Colony breathes. The world doesn’t care about you until you make it. And walking through the New Camp cavern for the first time, watching your eyes adjust to the darkness and the glow of the huts, remains one of the most transportive moments 2026 has offered. For fans of the original, this is the homecoming they deserved. For new players, this is the best possible introduction to one of the most distinctive RPGs ever built.

Is it worth buying Gothic 1 Remake if you loved the original or are just looking to dive into this world? My answer is: no. Or at least not right now. The remake is a terribly optimized game riddled with all sorts of bugs. In a few months, once the developers have fixed at least some of the issues, and the game itself may have dropped in price a bit, go ahead and head to the stores. Personally, I had a phenomenal time playing it and felt like that little kid in elementary school again, stepping into the Miners’ Valley for the very first time. The remake is great, and I can’t wait to give it another go, this time playing as the other side. I’m also really hoping that the revamped version of the sequel gets the green light. But is the remake better than the original, and is it worth choosing it over the original? To be honest, I see plenty of room for both titles to coexist on the market as equals. That way, you can play the timeless original one time and fire up the modern remake another time. Both games have their pros and cons, which defy the classic framework for evaluating games. And while I know I won’t convince the most die-hard fans, I still recommend that every fan of the series pick up this new version someday. As for newcomers who’d like to explore this universe for the first time? It’s definitely worth checking out the original, but all things considered, the remake, despite its distinctly retro gameplay and hardcore difficulty, seems like a much better starting point today.

Gothic 1 Remake turned out to be a rather mixed remake. The final result was influenced by the team's inexperience and budget constraints, which led to a certain rawness in the remake and the implementation of both successful and unsuccessful solutions. Despite this, Alkimia Interactive handled the legacy of Piranha Bytes with care, recreating Gothic 1 in a way that makes it accessible to a wider audience.

A wonderful remake that captures the spirit of Gothic and gives it a modern twist.

Gothic 1 Remake isn’t just a remake of an old game. It’s an attempt to revive a specific type of RPG that’s almost nonexistent today. It’s not merely a return of a famous franchise, but a reminder of a time when RPGs were built on character growth through patience, exploration, tough combat, curiosity, and hardship. A reminder of a time when there was no need to explain every step and when exploring the world was a true adventure. After all these years of waiting, what emerged wasn’t just another remake. It was a modern incarnation of one of the most important RPGs in history. And even though it has a few flaws, it’s a title that shows why Gothic was so exceptional.

Gothic 1 Remake is a brutal, breathtaking return to the legendary Mining Colony. Rejecting modern hand-holding, this faithful reimagining drops you into a living, reactive world where every step must be earned and survival depends on your wits. From its rewarding, evolving combat to its stunning Unreal Engine 5 visuals, it is a hardcore game tailored for true RPG purists who aren't afraid of a real challenge.

Alkimia has delivered a game that captures the strengths of its predecessor, led by a brilliantly constructed world and the brutal harshness of life in the Mining Valley. Defying contemporary trends, Gothic Remake doesn’t hold the player’s hand and rewards them with a great sense of satisfaction as they make progress. It’s just a shame that we’ve ended up with a game plagued by so many bugs.

Gothic 1 Remake is a rare breed that actually respects its source material instead of trying to reinvent itself. It’s not perfect, and it definitely won’t suit everyone, but it delivers exactly what long-time fans wanted, and that’s something a lot of modern remakes fail to do.

The Gothic Remake experience is certainly not for everyone, but those willing to pluck up the courage to get through the first few intense hours of gameplay will find it well worth their while, thanks to entertaining gameplay and a vast, detailed world just waiting to be explored. However, the game inherits some of the original’s flaws, whilst adding others specific to this new remake.

Gothic 1 Remake is a game that will kill you, force you to learn why, and then make you grateful for the lesson - and if that sounds like a good time, welcome to the Colony.
