How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Rise of Ronin really likes its players, and that’s what I love most about it. While its world features a lot of busywork, it’s also a joy to explore thanks to how easy and versatile movement is. An enthralling combat system openly traces the best of Sekiro and Nioh, serving the extract in a more accessible fashion with a huge variety of ways to fight. While co-op is restrictive, it’s still really funny to go online and turn bosses into confetti, plus you can run a cat rental service.”

“Rise of the Ronin surpasses Ghost of Tsushima in many aspects (with the exception of graphics), while offering a highly entertaining slice of Japanese history. And the high level of variation and the plethora of options make Ubisoft managers cry in the closet.”

“Rise of the Ronin is a step back for Team Ninja. The whole experience feels like a tech demo that was put aside and pulled out of a drawer at the last minute. The karma system, historical elements, and music make the game at least an average experience that will be appreciated only by die-hard fans of, for example, the second Assassin's Creed and the Japanese theme.”

“A successful attempt by Team Ninja to make a game in an open world. Even though there is little innovation here, it is not boring to follow the story (and influence it) and fight in fierce battles for dozens of hours.”

“Rise of the Ronin’s story is still good enough to keep players hooked, effectively luring them into the gameplay loop, which does have plenty of its own merits. But it’s dubious whether the various iniquities of the game are good enough to justify where it goes, especially knowing that all that effort can’t change which way the wind is blowing for Japan by the end.”

“Ultimately, Rise of the Ronin is a good game, but it falls short of its potential. For fans of samurai and feudal Japan, there's a lot to enjoy, but those expecting a revolutionary action RPG in the Souls-like vein may end up disappointed. Its combat is satisfying, and combined with an interesting story and a good setting, it may be enough to keep players hooked, but don't expect any major innovations, and be prepared to face terrible technical issues.”

“The PC version of Rise of the Ronin is a fantastic open-world experience that transports you to the Bakumatsu period of the Edo era. The world is teeming with authentic historical details, and combined with dynamic combat and intuitive controls, it offers a delightful experience for all fans of the genre and of Japan. Unfortunately, the title is severely let down by technical shortcomings in the form of poor optimization. If (and when) the optimization improves, the game will earn a solid 8/10 rating.”

“The companion system adds meaningful decisions and choices and attempts to add depth to every character in the game. The diverse set of weapons and tools at your disposal always keep combat fresh and engaging. And the game's evocative setting and its colourful cast of characters always push you forward into the story. Rise of the Ronin is clearly lifting above and beyond its weight-class, and you can see it wobbling at the knees. But to its credit, it never crumbles under that load.”

“If you have the time and the inclination Rise of the Ronin is a deep game with a rich, character-driven, story. However, you'll have to do battle with the controls, the multitude of systems, and endless reserves of useless loot, as well as your enemies, to get there.”

“Despite its shortcomings, trust me when I say it: Ronin’s gameplay, bosses, and traversal mechanics keep you hooked until the end.”

“Team Ninja delivers yet another game inspired by the “soulslike” genre. While some of the narrative mechanics and world design feel obsolete, the characters and especially the action are stars of the show. Fights carry the weight of most of the game’s appeal, and if you can see through many of the design downsides, you will probably have an unforgettable action experience.”

“Fans of overcoming obstacles will be happy. If you liked previous Team Ninja games (and Sekiro), don't think twice. A higher accessibility enabled Rise of the Ronin to be one of this studio's best games. If not the best!”
