How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 67 | 87 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 31% | 39 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 43 | 27 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 32% | 39 | 11 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“New Tales from the Borderlands could easily have been a hit if there was a more exciting story. Or at least the game devoted more to it than barely two of the five episodes. And it's a real shame because, as it stands, it's just like a pretty funny sitcom, but without a story and with an otherwise pretty strong foundation that just resulted in a pretty unmemorable experience, even though it had a perfect start.”

“New Tales from the Borderlands is an entertaining and heartfelt game. Even with the directing, that doesn't hit the spot all the time.”

“New Tales from the Borderlands is a bit difficult to evaluate, because in a way, it has the potential to become a fully-fledged part of the established Borderlands universe. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, the developers failed to capitalize on that potential, and instead of a great game, we got something I might call a test of fans’ patience. I really hope that, just like with the Postal series, this installment will be forgotten and we’ll pretend it never existed.”

“New Tales from the Borderlands is so overblown with all sorts of different kinds of humour that it is choking the comedic timing it could have had - most of the funny moments involve side characters and not the main ones. The story is good, but the choices don’t feel that important compared to the other games in the genre. ”

“New Tales From The Borderlands does a great job of capturing the look, feel and humour of the Borderlands franchise. It is far closer to a traditional Telltale game than a game from the mainline Borderlands franchise but does provide a mostly great story and characters to enjoy across it’s 10-12 hour experience. It didn’t quite stick the landing for me but I did appreciate how much the new cast was able to develop over the course of the game and how much better the performance was compared to the previous Telltale entry in the Tales From the Borderlands series. If you’re an existing fan of the Borderlands series, you’re likely going to have a pretty good time with New Tales From The Borderlands.”

“New Tales of the Borderlands is a worthy successor to the original Telltales games. We feel the evolution of the adventure-narrative style. For some, the game may be redundant or less original, but overall 2K and Gearbox gave us a quality game. Despite the busy time of year for new releases, if you like the genre this should be on top of your list.”

“We can scarcely recall an occasion where we were more disappointed by a sequel than New Tales from the Borderlands. We wanted to love this. We'd have accepted liking it. But we hate this game. This is a ten-hour narrative adventure that feels four times as long as it needs to be, with dreadful characters, and appalling, relentlessly unfunny jokes. It's a spectacular misfire, its only success to speak of being the rare example of a sequel so bad that it ruins the original, too.”

“New Tales from the Borderlands may not hit the highs of the original but it does deliver an oft laugh filled adventure with a great cast that fit right in with the Borderlands series.”

“If New Tales from the Borderlands is Gearbox Software's first attempt at reviving the greatness of Telltale Games, we hope it's also the last.”

“New Tales From the Borderlands could have been a much better game. There is a huge potential in the Borderlands universe to explore stories about all those people who with their work and sacrifice pay the bills for the eternal greed of corporations. The potential of this world to tell stories we can relate to and then give us the illusion that the little guys can win, even if it's just once, was completely wasted. Sadly, New Tales From the Borderlands only delivers in concept and, in execution, leaves much to be desired.”

“New Tales from the Borderlands is a sequel that seemingly forgets everything that made the original so special and shoehorns in a story that simply doesn’t keep you engaged. Whilst it’s visually lovely and feels like it’s a Borderlands experience, it’s all style and no substance. Without heart or humour, this feels like a cash-in, and for a sequel to one of the greatest narrative games of all time? That’s just not good enough.”

“New Tales from the Borderlands revives the narrative-driven charm of its predecessor with humor, branching choices, and episodic storytelling. Pacing issues, underwhelming minigames, and a weaker final episode hold it back from greatness, but for fans of graphic adventures and Borderlands’ offbeat tone, it might be a ride worth experiencing once.”
