How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 77 | 109 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 88% | 81 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 80 | 144 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 84% | 77 | 2359 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“It’s clear that The Fall of Avalon aims for Bethesda-level ambition without the resources to fully back it up. Still, beneath the rough edges lies a rich RPG experience that, when it works, keeps you engaged for hours.”

“Beneath its rough exterior lies a captivating project, kept alive by its vibrant open world, non-linear progression, and handcrafted gameplay. It's simply fun to play - unlike the heavily outdated Oblivion, which, aside from visuals, has little left to offer.”

“Despite these technical hiccups and the sense of artificiality that creeps into the open world on a macro scale, The Fall of Avalon’s intimate moments remain resonant, and, at their most evocative, enthralling.”

“Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a well-crafted open-world RPG inspired by a fantastic board game. The combination of the dark and gritty world of King Arthur with Skyrim-style gameplay is a success and works well. There’s a truly gritty atmosphere in certain situations that will definitely win you over. If you can overlook the game’s minor bugs, weaker graphics, and not-so-smart enemies, it’s a great experience with excellent gameplay that’s definitely worth your time.”

“Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is an incredible western RPG that draws big inspiration from Bethesda games of old. While the latest similar games like Starfield and Avowed failed to capture the essence of these kinds of games, Tainted Grail does so perfectly. It does not hold the players’ hand and encourages them to explore every inch of the map, and there will always be something to find. And with an incredibly competitive AA price point, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to every RPG player. ”

“Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is not simply „Polish Skyrim”. It’s a well crafted RPG that surprises with great atmosphere, interesting story and the developers’ ingenuity when faced with limitations of the technical or budgetary nature.”

“Ultimately, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon succeeds at a lot of what it’s going for, and it cannot be overstated how successful the adaptation of the Arthurian legend is. Not everyone is going to resonate with the creepier, darker tone, and the game’s technical state leaves much to be desired. However, those that do resonate with it will find an interesting, complex, intelligent narrative with the player being used both as a framing device and a driving force.”

“If you’re willing to embrace its old-school charm and overlook some dated design choices, Tainted Grail offers a rewarding RPG experience in a fascinating setting. Come for the dark fantasy, stick around for the dash of Monty Python weirdness and all the fun adventures you wind up experiencing when you step off the beaten path.”

“A deliciously old-fashioned open-world RPG, that harkens back to a seemingly bygone era of pure gaming fun.”

“Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon offers a dark, unique take on Arthurian legend with strong storytelling and engaging combat, but frequent bugs and crashes make for a frustrating experience.”

“Look, in the middle of all this chaos, the world does have atmosphere. Gritty, creepy, and weirdly beautiful at times, it’s just so unfortunate that the graphic fidelity is so freaking inconsistent.”

“Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a dark fantasy open-world RPG inspired by Arthurian legend. With deep character builds, rich lore, and tactical combat, it's a must-play for RPG veterans-despite some technical flaws.”
