How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Copycat is without a doubt one of the biggest surprises of the year. The game, which appeared out of nowhere, stole my heart and reminded me about the important values in life that we should always keep in mind.”

“Copycat did what it aimed to do, tell the story through the lens of a cat and leap through a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the narrative. The audio cues made me hone in on my own emotions and guide Dawn to overcome her fears and insecurities. I truly did enjoy the game, as I went back through 1.5 more times to finish the Steam achievements, and did find additional items and minigames each time that I didn’t interact with in my first playthrough. One thing that I did find challenging was the quick time events with one at the very end not allowing me enough time to hit all the correct buttons. Thankfully, the timer went away and allowed me to continue forward. If you are looking for an emotional story to play I recommend pouncing on Copycat.”

“Copycat is an exceptional indie game that will touch your heart. It’s a sensitive and emotionally powerful story about acceptance, rejection, and the search for a home, told from the perspective of an abandoned cat. The charming visuals, moving soundtrack, and outstanding voice acting create an unforgettable experience that will stay with you for a long time. If you’re looking for a game that will make you reflect on the meaning of life, the importance of human relationships, and what the word “home” means to you, then you definitely can’t go wrong with Copycat. And above all, don’t forget to have tissues handy!”

“The gaming equivalent of an alleycat: it's rough around the edges, but you'll learn to grow fond of it despite its numerous quirks.”

“You know, it’s often said that letting emotions guide you is a mistake, but this time, we feel compelled to share something more personal. For us, Copycat wasn’t merely a game, it was a fleeting yet meaningful life experience. We won’t tell you Copycat is without its flaws, to do so would be disingenuous, not only to what we’ve previously expressed but to ourselves as well. However, it’s precisely these imperfections that make it so beautifully emotional, gripping, and undeniably moving in its imperfect beauty. This is a deeply touching, reflective journey that anyone, no matter your age, should embark on, whether you’re a cat lover or not. It stands as a tribute to the unconditional bond between humans and animals, but it’s also a profound meditation on loneliness, loss, and the essence of family. Despite some understandable limitations, Copycat succeeds in delivering a universal message, one that leaves an indelible mark on the heart of its players.”

“During its three- to four-hour gameplay the game addresses topics such as loss, aging, family conflicts and the relationship between pet and owner, doing so with a sensitivity yet also a raw honesty that will likely leave no one unmoved. Above all, the gameplay experience of being a cat is convincingly conveyed and it's fun moving through the game world, exploring it as best you can. While you'll otherwise look in vain for truly innovative or new ideas in the gameplay, the compact playing time and gripping story make this forgivable, and what it offers is entertaining enough to carry the story.”

“Copycat really was an emotional roller coaster and kind of tough in the way that some emotional movies are hard to watch. The second half of the game picked up the pace and delivered a beautiful ending, but it took some time to get there.”

“A quiet and relaxed game, that makes us think and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.”

“Copycat is just an emotional rollercoaster of a story-driven game that is a bit harsh on the reality of truth. I know that talking about the story would be a huge spoiler for anyone who loves cats or wants to experience a rather cruel turn of events, but it would be worth it if you want to try out Copycat for yourself. Just don’t forget that everything will turn out to be better, eventually…”
