How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“In all the ways “open world” could be used as a pejorative, Forspoken excels.”

“The few glimmers of brilliance in Forspoken are overshadowed by an abundance of problems that are hard to overlook. A horribly written story is accentuated by a morally disengaged protagonist; an empty open-world with the usual checkbox of meaningless busywork gives no incentive to explore; while the magic system sports lots of control and options but very little reason to deviate from spamming the same moves. This is a game in desperate need of another year in development rather than the bland-fest we're served up. Forspoken? More like For-shame.”

“World exploration in Forspoken can bring you some real joy, and same could be said about the combat system. And yet the writing, weird visual presentation, and overall direction can really bring the whole experience down.”

“Forspoken is a game with fantastic potential, but it suffers from many problems. To unlock its full potential, you need to get used to the game's pace and start enjoying the great feeling of speed, but if you play slowly, you'll soon break the game.”

“Unsightly, but also a good game that desperately lacks polishing. Although not all the shortcomings can be put up with, in the end Forspoken leaves a pleasant impression - it is even a pity that we are unlikely to see a continuation with corrected errors.”

“It’s a shame that Forspoken wasn’t a huge commercial success. Players were put off by the high price tag for what is actually quite a small amount of content (you can finish it quickly if you’re not aiming to complete everything but just want to get through the story), and some players were also bothered by the graphics and optimization. But you can’t please everyone. I’m sorry that this kitschy (but in a good way, in my opinion) beautiful love story, which fully unfolds in the end, didn’t melt the heart of the average gamer, just like the supposedly imperfect open world and combat system. Then we have to ask how Forspoken stacks up against games like Elden Ring, Hogwarts Legacy, and others. However, since a review reflects the reviewer’s subjective opinion, I’m giving the game an above-average rating.”

“When the excellent parkour and spirited combat mechanics work together as intended, they raise the game above its mundane peripherals. But, more often than not, Forspoken is bogged down by its by-the-numbers open-world design, its predictable story, and just a broader lack of imagination. By the end of its near-20-hour campaign, Forspoken hangs firmly in limbo, somewhere between fresh and stale.”

“Forspoken isn’t for everyone - and this is its strength. Games that spark controversy can be the most interesting. This seems a sign that the developers have successfully realized their vision. Such courage is commendable, especially in the era of clones.”

“As someone who loves his games to feel very kinetic and fun, the magic combat of Forspoken did propel the package overall, even when the rest of it could seem from a different era.”

“All these fragments of Forspoken collide in messy ways that reveal the lack of depth or even synergy across the whole thing. Forspoken is, if anything, a compelling enough first draft at something that I think can be greater. Maybe next time around the puzzle pieces will actually fit and I'll be able to see the game it could've been. But as it stands right now, a more explicit direction could've prevented the thorough roasting everyone seems keen to deliver.”

“Forspoken is a good open world action adventure game overall. While I would have loved if the team at Luminous had nailed every aspect of the game, it seems this time around at least it fell a little short when it comes to the main story, character writing and some design decisions. It does take place in a world I would love to see more from if the series is given the chance as there are seeds of greatness here.”
