How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Town of Zoz is a hidden gem that wears its GameCube-era inspirations proudly on its sleeve. Studio Pixanoh has managed to successfully blend the satisfying, top-down combat of classic Zelda titles with the wholesome, relationship-building agricultural loops of Stardew Valley. While the painfully slow opening hours and minor UI bugs require a bit of patience, the gorgeous cel-shaded art style, deep cooking mechanics, and lovable cast of characters make the journey entirely worthwhile. If you are looking for a cozy, nostalgic adventure with a surprising amount of mechanical depth, Town of Zoz is serving up exactly what you need.

Town of Zoz’s combat feels a bit jumbled, but the presentation, general gameplay, and music are excellent and make for a pretty unique title. If you don’t see potentially bumpy combat as a dealbreaker, I think there’s a lot to really dig about this game, as it juggles a number of concepts in a distinct and mostly enjoyable way.

The Town of Zoz has been a story given magical life. Landscapes and crowded town streets are stuffed to the brim with cultural influence that almost makes you swear you can smell Ito's cooking. Despite its technical flaws, there is a wonderfully unique farming/cooking/adventure game that sets itself far apart from a heavily populated genre.

Despite many of its aspects being underbaked, Town of Zoz is a hearty action RPG with plenty of soul. Picky eaters may want to give this one a miss, but those who can stomach a few bugs and glitches will still find a treat here.

Town of Zoz is a game full of creative ideas. It blends farming, cooking, exploration and storytelling into a colourful indie adventure that clearly had a lot of passion behind it. The combat doesn’t quite match the strength of the rest of the experience, and the pacing can feel slow at times, but there’s still a lot to appreciate here. The world-building is intriguing, the characters are memorable, and the game’s unique visual style gives it a strong sense of personality. It’s definitely a game with rough edges, but it’s also one that has a lot of charm. For players who enjoy exploring unusual indie projects and don’t mind a few imperfections, Town of Zoz offers a surprisingly engaging adventure. I highly recommend trying the free demo on Steam.

Town of Zoz is a beautiful game with a big heart that is sadly too frustrating, buggy, and shallow in its mechanics to recommend.
