At first glance, Bellwright might seem like the usual blend of RPG, survival, and sandbox elements already seen in dozens of other indie productions. However, its strong management component helps it avoid the dangerous “more of the same” label, turning it into a deep and enjoyable experience. Bellwright is a rough gem: a sandbox in the truest sense of the word, but also a great role-playing game that genre fans will surely appreciate. Unfortunately, the console port currently holds the experience back, partly due to an interface that is difficult to navigate with a controller and a lack of proper optimization. At the time of this review’s publication, the game is still in Early Access, meaning Donkey Crew still has plenty of time to address these issues and refine the weaker aspects ahead of the full release.

There is a good game buried beneath Bellwright's achingly slow opening hours and UI awkwardness. There's satisfaction to be had in building up a base and seeing your NPCs gather, build, fight and progress for you, but it takes too long to get there and I just think most people will give up before they do.

An authentic and complex medieval life simulator that emphasises teamwork and management over individual achievement, and while it’s a slow burn the complexity of options more than makes up for a lack of polish.

Bellwright hasn’t quite managed to realise its full potential, which is hampered by a fair number of issues, both technical and mechanical. However, if you’re looking for a deep medieval survival and management game with highly interactive systems, there isn’t much on the market that’s as distinctive as what you’ll find here.

This game has really good bones, with 12 or 13 hours in the game I feel I’ve barely scratched the surface. The good far outweigh the bad in my eyes and the game feels oddly relaxing. It gives me the vibes of those old mobile games like clash of clans. If you enjoyed the settlement system in the fallout games you’ll more than likely like this game as well. I would highly recommend this game.

Bellwright works in a lot of ways. In particular, it allows you to customize your gameplay experience to better cater to your abilities. Plus, being able to just dig into a map and make it your own is a super cool idea. However, the problems embedded in the game's core make it a rather hard pill to swallow. Villager behavior, disproportionate time management, cumbersome building limitations, and unoptimized menu systems bring the game experience down. There's a fun game here, but you need to sift through a lot of frustrating limitations to get to that fun game.
