How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Luna Abyss is one of 2026’s best AA releases and one of the year’s most pleasant surprises. Bonsai Collective and Kwalee Labs have made a debut that punches well above its budget, a first-person bullet hell shooter with a distinctive biomechanical world, character writing that earns genuine investment, and combat that builds into genuine lock-in when the difficulty is set to match your skills. The rough edges are real but minor relative to the quality of the whole. At $29.99 for a focused 8-10 hour experience, this is an easy recommendation for fans of Doom Eternal, Metroid Prime, or anyone who wants an FPS with something genuinely different to say.”

“Luna Abyss is one of those moments when a game becomes more than a pleasant surprise, it’s when a game becomes a complete joy to play. It has fantastic platforming and bullet hell inspired combat with an intriguing narrative. While not all of what’s happening in Luna Abyss is adequately explained, it’s a wonderful dive into a universe that I would love to see more off.”

“Luna Abyss stands as a powerful reminder of what video games can still achieve as an artistic medium. Not merely entertainment, nor spectacle alone, but a fully authored experience capable of leaving a lasting psychological and emotional imprint. Kwalee Labs delivers a shooter that unsettles, absorbs, and resonates with remarkable confidence, supported by striking art direction, an unusually mature narrative, and gameplay that remains cohesive, precise, and assured in its identity. While the experience intentionally leaves certain questions unresolved and suffers from occasional readability issues in a small number of late-game boss encounters, these remain minor shortcomings within an otherwise remarkable achievement. Luna Abyss is a dark, oppressive, and deeply evocative descent into a world consumed by faith, decay, and obsession, an experience that gradually pulls the player deeper into its depths until nothing remains except the Abyss itself. And when the credits finally roll, the feeling that remains is immediate and unmistakable: the urge to descend once more.”

“Luna Abyss is a game that is technically, gameplay-wise, and creatively flawed, revealing numerous shortcomings in its development. From the narrative structure to the shooting mechanics, from the progression systems to the exploration mechanics, there is a noticeable lack of boldness and experience on the part of the team, a shortcoming compounded, among other things, by a budget that was certainly not generous. Beyond that, however, the good intentions are all there: the world-building has its own unique qualities, and the atmosphere is steeped in a rare sense of mystery and charm, which is then brought to life on screen through an art style that is nothing short of sensational.”

“Luna Abyss is a remarkably brave debut that understands that intense bullet-hell action means nothing without a world worth fighting for. While its limited four-weapon arsenal and rigid shield mechanics occasionally drag down the combat, the game heavily compensates with an incredibly oppressive atmosphere, superb sound design, and a genuine narrative mystique that keeps you hooked from the first minute. It carries the cracks of a debut, but it speaks with the voice of a seasoned veteran.”

“Luna Abyss is a peculiar game. If taken solely for its shooter component, it would barely reach a passing grade. But if we add to this excellent worldbuilding, fascinating, mysterious, and disturbing, a great atmosphere, beautiful settings (not all, but most), and truly successful platforming sections, then it goes from passing grade to excellent in an instant.”

“Luna Abyss is a AA shooter that holds its own against some of the elite of the genre. Its enticing and ominous sci-fi world is a delight to look at artistically, even if its muddy graphics let it down on closer inspection. Its story is fine, but a slick sense of progression keeps its action and platforming interesting from start to finish.”

“Luna Abyss has its own identity that sets it apart from more generic shooters with its mysterious world, strange characters, oppressive environments, and constant sense of danger. It never feels like a standard military FPS with a sci-fi skin layered on top.”

“On its own merits, Luna Abyss is a tightly put together first person shooter/platformer with an interesting enough story and concept. The gunplay is rewarding and not bogged down by tacked-on upgrade mechanics. The platforming is a neat little mix of brute force and lateral thinking, sometimes both simultaneously.”

“Luna Abyss’ strength may not be its originality, but it weaves multiple genres and shooters together to craft one of the most engaging titles this year. Fawkes and the collective stories that are presented here come to life with strong writing and brilliant performances, with twists and turns that are genuinely pulled off to sheer perfection. I adored Luna Abyss, and simply want more.”

“Luna Abyss struggles with crafting consistently rewarding gameplay moments, but even the dullest of shooting sections is worth getting through in order to inch further into the wonderfully weird world and unforgettable story of this game.”
