How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Split Fiction is another jewel in Hazelight Studio’s ever-growing crown of co-op adventures. This game constantly introduces new mechanics that keep the gameplay fresh, and each new story feels unique, despite continually returning to the same two genres. There are random difficulty spikes that can easily trip up inexperienced players and lead to frustration, but this was some of the most fast-paced, light-hearted fun I’ve had in a long time.

Split Fiction is one of the top candidates for Game of the Year 2025, I have no doubt about that. It is a great blend of genres that surprises you with something new and innovative at every turn. Josef Fares, after the great It Takes Two, has done it again and delivered one of the best experiences of the year.

Split Fiction is another great addition to the Hazelight catalog, one that solidifies the studio as the paragon of co-op gameplay. If you thought It Takes Two was a fluke, think again. Split Fiction learns from its predecessor’s story missteps, doubles down on the great platforming, and deftly pays homage to gaming royalty. The result is Hazelight’s most creative game to date, and, in my humble opinion, its best.

Although Split Fiction works on the It Takes Two formula, it makes up for it with an absolutely insane pace of on-screen madness.

With Split Fiction, Hazelight Studios has continued its streak of delivering yet another Game of the Year contender. It is very hard to find something negative about Split Fiction. It features gorgeous levels, excellent gameplay design, and a co-op experience that only Hazelight Studios can deliver. It is baffling to see how Split Fiction delivers specific genre experiences better than AAA titles that are specifically built for those genres. It not only shows how dedicated the developer is to promote healthier gaming activities but also manages to create experiences that just show the entire industry how it is done. With a free Friend Pass, Split Fiction is a no-brainer for every fan of co-op games, whether they love action games, shooter games, wacky games, or everything else.

Split Fiction is one of the best co-op games in the industry. While its story isn't original, it uses it well and features an outstanding, dynamic duo of protagonists - Mio and Zoe. The gameplay is just as dynamic, blending genres and worlds with inventive cooperative mechanics. After A Way Out and It Takes Two, it's hard to find a better co-op experience, whether you're playing with a veteran or a complete beginner.

In the end, Split Fiction is, against the odds, a smile-inducing charmer. But it’s for that exact reason that it deserved a script that put its best face forward. Split Fiction offers up a meticulously crafted playground, but it’s disappointing that the framework around it feels like it was fashioned by the 10-year-olds who’d play there.

Split Fiction feels like a gift. Its sole aim is to entertain and bring players together by testing them at every turn. Hazelight gives us two distinct worlds, each filled with a huge array of activities for co-op partners to enjoy and argue over. It serves as a surprising visual showcase for the Switch 2 and enhances the Friend's Pass feature, allowing our original Switch buddies to join in the fun.

Split Fiction is an explosion of creativity that does not compromise fun for anything. The story amazingly compliments the various gameplay styles and approaches that never go stale. If It Takes Two was revolutionary, Split Fiction is an amazing step up in the genre and a showcase of amazing gameplay ideas. It’s proof that when creativity is allowed to flourish, exceptional games follow.

Split Fiction is yet another triumph for Josef Fares. In the area of co-op experiences, nobody has even come close to what Hazelight proposes. No one can top this brilliant and incredibly difficult to execute gameplay formula. I can’t wait to hear the developers fiery speech at this year’s Game Awards, when he will undoubtedly receive another trophy.

Split Fiction is another triumph for Hazelight Studios. It’s a joyful, wildly inventive co-op experience that constantly surprises and delights. The seamless blend of genres, tight platforming, and stunning visuals make it an absolute blast to play from start to finish. While parts of the story may not leave a lasting impact, the sheer fun of the game more than makes up for it.
