How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Another romp through an abandoned, dark, and scary place, pursued by a dangerous foe that works well enough”

“An earnest effort at recreating the puzzling contraptions of an escape room mixed with an Outlast-like antagonist, Scholar’s Mate falls victim to the most insipid storytelling, boring gameplay and obtuse puzzles. While it may look the part of a horror game, the only true terror will stem from the fact you could have just gone to a real escape room, and gotten more value for your money. ”

“Scholar's Mate is an interesting entry in the horror genre, blending an eerie atmosphere with escape room gameplay, but its tricky puzzles might not be for everyone.”

“This is an indie horror game that has nothing to envy of others, with a constant degree of tension and puzzles at the level of the best horror Escape Rooms.”

“Finding your way out of an abandoned asylum is always frightening, especially when an unexplained killer is hunting you. The puzzles are challenging and you are constantly on your toes because the enemy is lurking. Unfortunately, the complexity makes gameplay frustrating and the game isn’t long. For a short horror room experience, this game delivers a satisfying experience.”

“While the story left some threads loose and the relentless pursuing grew tiresome, Scholar's Mate conjures an unnerving atmosphere through its grim confinement. Deviating escape rooms and a gruesome antagonist make it a decent diversion for horror fans seeking a unique challenge.”

“Solving the obscure puzzles of Scholar's Mate can be troublesome enough, and so when you also add in a pursuer and limited stealth mechanics, you're left with an experience that is generally unrewarding and frustrating.”

“Overall Scholar’s Mate provides a very different take on an escape room game. With a tense atmosphere and plenty of puzzles to keep your brain busy. However, I will say the game is quite short and offers not much else apart from this. The audio is where the game shines and is a positive to take away from the experience. I hope the developers use this well in their upcoming games! If you are looking for a quick experience and to spend a small amount of money to keep yourself entertained then Scholar’s Mate will reach that expectation!”

“Scholar's Mate puts you in a cramped scenario filled with pursuit and hard escape room puzzles to solve. While this sounds good, this game may not be for everyone, Pacing can feel uneven, and the constant pursuit can be aggravating when trying to solve multiple puzzles. Still, there's something fun here for horror fans and puzzle lovers, especially since the game only asks for $12.99.”

“Scholar’s Mate fulfills its purpose very well. Obviously, there are the risks of a short, puzzle-based game, such as the complete absence of replay value, but in terms of challenges, visuals, and immersion, it is all quite pleasant.”

“If you want to have a good time scared on Halloween and solve Escape Room style puzzles, but intuitive in company and you are one of those who have a hard time with horror games, perhaps this somewhat light proposal from Jandusoft is for you, but for those who are looking for a hardcore experience full of jump scares, they will be disappointed.”
