How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“The story and character models are something I can live with. Unless someone is a purist, then the game will certainly make them lose interest very quickly. In my opinion, however, the biggest sins of Silent Hill 2 are the extensive exploration, which eventually becomes tiresome, and the untapped potential of combat.”

“All things considered? Silent Hill 2 Remake is an almost excellent game that just couldn’t help itself. It does so much to impress, but the obnoxious elements are so consistent they ensure Team Silent’s masterpiece is far from bested...I never want to see another Mannequin again in my life.”

“Silent Hill 2 from Bloober Team is a phenomenal revamp of the legendary game from Konami. The changes in the presentation of the story, the changes in the gameplay and the entire audio-visual setting blend together perfectly, presenting the definitive version of the foggy city. I hope that the collaboration between Konami and Bloober Team will not end with just this production, because it is clear that Bloober knows what it is doing and understands the brand.”

“Silent Hill 2 returns to take your breath away with deep psychological horror and an improved gameplay experience. The remake of the second part brings back the moving story of James Sunderland with stunning graphics and audio, clever puzzles, and more challenging enemies. The new camera perspective makes exploration more exciting, and the technical performance on Xbox Series X is smooth and stable.”

“The remake may not have met my own interpretations and feelings of the original Silent Hill 2 in all the right ways. But it would be foolish to deny the amount of effort and love Bloober Team poured into this whole project.”

“In recent years, remakes have been held to significantly higher standards, and remaking something like Silent Hill 2 is a thankless job that could never satisfy everyone. And somehow, the Bloober Team managed to do precisely that. The game retains, almost word for word and room for room, everything that made the original so timeless and legendary and promises precisely the same experience it did all those years ago. At the same time, though, it's expanded to include entirely new locations or altered puzzles. Everything, however, completely respects the original, and I'm not afraid to say that when it comes to remaking an old game into a new one, Silent Hill 2 from Bloober Team sets a new bar.”

“Nearly perfect remake and a love-letter to a cult classic.”

“Silent Hill 2 has been reborn by a series of smart, subtle, and elegant choices, including an expanded take on the original’s haunting soundtrack by Yamaoka Akira himself. Bloober Team haven’t made a game to replace the original so much as it’s made one that honors it, giving a uniquely and distressing tale a way to retain its power in a modern gaming landscape.”

“Silent Hill 2 is a successful remake of a classic game, and unless I’m shamefully overlooking something, it’s actually the only AAA title in recent years to embrace a more psychological approach to survival horror. The developers at Bloober Team have succeeded in modernizing, both technologically and in terms of design, the high-quality foundation left behind by the creators of the original, which is more than 20 years old. However, I consider the (melee) combat to be the most controversial element; there’s more of it in the new version, it’s often impossible to avoid, and at times it can really get under your skin.”

“After more than 20 years, Silent Hill 2 is back in its best form. The remake is an audio-visual marvel while maintaining the original atmosphere and stellar story. Despite some lackluster choices and repetitive combat, it is a must play for any horror fan.”

“As a regular representative of the genre the new Silent Hill 2 is quite good, and should deliver lots of fun to gamers that like this kind of games. But as a remake of one of the most important horror games in history this new version looks extremely mediocre, which in my eyes is a greater crime than making a simply bad game.”

“From the unsettling atmosphere to the visceral combat and psychological depth, the game excels at drawing you into its twisted world. The storytelling is gripping, with characters like James Sunderland and the cast of disturbing personalities he meets adding layers of complexity that go beyond typical horror fare. The remake respects the source material while modernizing it for today’s audience, and even if you’ve never played the 2001 original, it still stands as a deeply unsettling and rewarding journey.”
