How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

The enthusiasm and talent of the Blue Backpack team shine through from beginning to end in Constance. Eccentricities and all, this fluid action-adventure comes highly recommended. I had a blast beating the game and pushing as close to 100% completion as possible; there is simply so much to discover here. I'm excited to see what's next (DLC) from the studio-their prior work, Trüberbrook, is also worth a look. A different type of game entirely, but one with quirky charm too.

Constance is a game that’s tragically at odds with itself. Its story feels like a warm blanket, but its boss battles are a trial by fire. Its world is vibrant, but its map is cumbersome. Perhaps that’s the point, that finding solace takes pain, perseverance, and self-determination. I can respect the vision, but I’m just not sure the final product did that vision justice. I admire the effort put into Constance and commend bildundtonfabrik for treating the mental health crisis with the care and compassion it deserves. If ever the team created a sequel, this canvas could really take flight. As is, Constance is a good oeuvre that could’ve been great.

Constance will especially thrill fans of Metroidvania games. Its charming world, full of colors and tones, will captivate many an artistic soul, and the adrenaline rush from its boss fights and obstacle courses will have you breaking a sweat more than once, even though the main story will only take you a few hours to complete. What’s more, it tackles the important topic of mental health and the reality that, at times, we are our own worst enemies. All of this makes it a game that’s definitely worth checking out.

Constance is an example of one of the hardest things in gaming. To take ideas established four decades ago and use them to say something different and interesting is a wonderful feat worth celebrating. Constance has something to say, and it says it well. There are flaws in the moment-to-moment gameplay, such as its bosses and a few tedious platforming sections, and it's not something that's going to completely rock the Metroidvania space, but it doesn't need to. It's a much-needed reminder of the joys of concentration and an antidote to an overstimulating world. This is an easy recommendation to any Metroidvania fans who want something familiar to spend 10 hours on. Those a bit more wary of the genre might find themselves less enchanted, but Constance is absolutely worth playing for its visuals and ideas alone.

Constance is a game crafted with care over many years, and it shows. It has its highs and lows, but the overall experience is rewarding, original, and genuinely beautiful. Its map is the weakest part, yet everything is balanced out by its stunning art direction, well-tuned challenge, and the heartfelt passion the team pours into it from start to finish. It’s absolutely worth playing, give it a try.

Don’t let its more mild-looking and artistic elements fool you, this is a tougher and more skill-based Metroidvania than you may assume

A slick and polished slice of 2D Metroidvania comfort food that executes well on a familiar formula. A lack of new ideas and a few mechanical stumbles hold it back from reaching the same heights as the classics that inspired it, but it gets close enough to scratch the same itch.

Constance arrives in a year full of standout releases, reaffirming the indie developer’s strong presence. While classified as a Metroidvania, it stands apart from others with a psychologically impactful story, polished and enjoyable gameplay, and worlds designed like works of art. Its only drawback is the lack of fast travel between save points, and its length is relatively short for the genre.

Constance is, above all, a difficult Metroidvania, one that truly demands precision, attention, and resilience, especially when facing bosses. But the title also shows sensitivity by offering accessibility options that soften much of that harshness, making room for those who want to enjoy the narrative, art, and symbolism without facing so much pressure.

Constance handles the topic of mental health with the necessary respect yet still manages to tell a story within a fantasy setting that is both meaningful and enjoyable but still never forgetting the importance of entertaining gameplay. This balance is incredibly well done and I thoroughly enjoyed both the combat and the platforming sections. A few enemies could perhaps have benefited from a bit more balancing but ultimately it's the battles I had to replay most often that have stuck with me the most.

At the end of the day this is a beautiful title that uses both its themes and mechanics to tell an important story. I do not need all my games to reinvent the wheel. Constance is another standout within this particular genre.
